Wolves club Saints for GNAC sweep

KEISER, Ore.—Tallying 26 hits across the two games, the Western Oregon University baseball team opened GNAC play with a Friday sweep over Saint martin's while playing at Volcanoes Stadium.
 
The Wolves and Saints will resume their four-game series on Sunday while playing at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Washington. Opening pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. for the opening game of the doubleheader.
 
Game 1 – Western Oregon 10, Saint Martin's 3

WOU connected on four hits and drew a walk in its first six at bats to plate a pair of runs in the first inning. Connor McCord drove in Jay Leverett with a single to left while Jared McDonald drew a bases-loaded walk for the second score.
 
Breaking open the game, Nyles Nygaard provided a 3-run blast to center field in the fourth as the Wolves scored six runs before the Saints were finally able to answer with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Batting eight players in the 7th inning, WOU extended its lead with a trio of runs, including another bases loaded walk, this time by McCord. WOU outhit the Saints 17 to 8 in the game with leadoff hitter Jacob Martinez going 5 for 6 with four runs scored. With the line, Martinez was the first Wolf in nearly a decade to record five hit sin a game with Dylan Bruck the last to accomplish the feat in April 2018 against MSU Billings.
 
In all, WOU's 1-2-3-4 batters went 13 for 21 with three walks and nine runs scored.
 
Alex Roth started the game for WOU and allowed two runs in 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Nick Parr. Parr picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of work. Allowing one hit each, Kolby Bales and Jake Simmons closed out the final four frames.
 
Game 2 – Western Oregon 9, Saint Martin's 3
Duplicating the opener, WOU scored the first six runs of the game en route too the sweep. .

Jared McDonald delivered a solo homer to center in the first while Connor McCord continued his hot start to the season with 2-run homers in the 5th and 7th innings.
 
With three home runs for support, starter Gabe Benavides was credited with the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. Grant Fisher and Jacob Fricke got the Wolves to the 7th where McCord moved to the mound for a clean final frame. The three relievers sent the Saints down in order by facing the minimum eight batters over the combined 2 2/3 innings.
 
In addition to McCord's 2 for 4 day that featured five RBI, Jay Leveret wet 2 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
