LYNNWOOD, Wash.—With 15 runs in the opener and a 6-inning gem by starter Craig Grubbe in the nightcap, Western Oregon University completed a weekend sweep over Saint Martin's with 15-8 and 5-2 wins while playing at Tritons Field on Sunday.
With the results, Western Oregon improved to 4-7 on the season and 4-0 in GNAC play. Saint Martin's fell to 1-11 overall.
The Wolves are scheduled to host Montana State University Billings this week for the 2018 home opener. The four-game series is slated to begin on Friday, March 9 with a 12 p.m. opening pitch.
GAME 1: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's, 15-8
Scoring 11 runs in the first three innings, including a four-run first frame, Western Oregon defeated Saint Martin's 15-8 in the opening game on Sunday.
Nyles Nygaard lifted a 2-run double down the left-field line to make it a 6-0 contest in the second and returned with a 3-run homer to right in the next stanza.The Wolves added two runs in the fourth before the Saints scored seven unanswered runs to make it an 11-8 contest.
Connor McCord connected on a 2-run homer in the ninth to regain some of the cushion for Kolby Bales, who closed out the final 2 1/3 innings on the mound for the Wolves. Bales allowed one hit and walked one in his stint following fellow reliever Justin Dolezal's appearance. Dolezal was credited with the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief work.
Nygaard ended the game with a 4 for 6 line that included five RBI and three runs scored.
Jay Leverett and Jared McDonald joined McCord with two RBI each.
GAME 2: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's 5-2
Tossing a no-hitter through four innings, Craig Grubbe led WOU to a series sweep against the Saints. Grubbe went on to allow two runs on two hits before turning the ball over to closer Nick Parr in the 7th. Holding a three-run lead, Parr picked up the save after a scoreless final frame with just a single walk as a blemish in the outing.
WOU stranded single runners in each of the first four innings before breaking through with a 3-run fifth.
Justin Spinner initiated the attack with a lead-off double while Cody Dykstra followed with an RBI single to center.
WOU's next two runs were aided by two SMU throwing errors, a walk and a pair of wild pitches.
The Saints got two runs back off a homer by Austin Feist in the home half of the fifth.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead heading into the 7th, Nyles Nygaard tapped his second homer of the day to start the 7th while Jared McDonald followed two batters later with a round tripper of his own for the final score.
