NEWBERG, Ore.—Playing on the road for its home opener, Western Oregon University baseball team split a pair of shutout against Montana State Billings on Friday.
With the field in Monmouth unplayable this weekend, Western Oregon's (5-8, 5-1 GNAC)four-game series against Montana State Billings (9-7, 4-2 GNAC) was moved to George Fox University's Morse Athletic Complex for Friday's games while the series will conclude at Concordia's in Portland on Saturday.
The opening pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Porter Park.
Game 1: Western Oregon 8, MSU Billings 0
The Wolves got seven strong innings from starter Alex Roth and used a 6-run 6th inning to claim eth opener.
Griffey Halley opened the scoring with a 2-run blast in the 4th frame but with Roth pitching a shutout the Wolves tacked on more than enough run sport in the middle innings.
Connor McCord belted his fifth home run of the spring to plate three while
Justin Wakem and Cody Dykstra followed with RBI hits for the 8-0 spread.
Roth allowed just four hits while striking out six to collect the win. Kolby Bales and Dylan Myers tossed clean eighth and ninth innings for WOU.
Game 2: Western Oregon 0, MSU Billings 3
Beginning in the fourth, the Yellojackets scored single runs in three straight innings to gain a Friday split. Kade Hall homered to center field in the fourth while Andrew Schleusner used a double to right to score teammate Wyatt Setian in the fifth.
MSUB's final score occurred on a sacrifice fly by Conner Linebarger in the sixth. Steen Fredrickson and Adam Cox combined for the shutout with Frederickson going five full innings before turning it over to Cox, who earned the save in the two-inning stint. The duo held the Wolves to two hits while striking out seven batters.
