Wolves stop SPU to advance to GNAC Title game

ANCHORAGE, Alaska—Led by recently minted conference player of the year Tanner Omlid, No. 1-seeded Western Oregon University advanced to the GNAC Championship game for the third straight season with a 97-70 win over No. 4-seed Seattle Pacific on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Western Oregon (28-1) extended its national-leading winning streak to 21 games. The Wolves will face Saint Martin's in the championship game on Saturday after the Saints nipped No. 2-seed Western Washington, 69-68, in the final seconds in the early semifinal matchup.

Opening tip for the championship game is set for 5:15 p.m. AKST and will be carried live on ESPN3.

Tanner Omlid, who was named the GNAC Player of the Year earlier in the week, scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and delivered four assists in the first half alone to help the Wolves to a 20-point lead heading to the locker room.

The Wolves trailed for less than a minute in the first half and generated a 10-point lead (26-16) at the midway mark of the opener. They were never threatened in the second half of play as the lead stretched to as many as 34 points in the second half.

Helping WOU to a 58.7 field goal percentage on the night, Vince Boumann went 7 for 7 for 14 points in the first half before ending with 17 points.

Nikhil Lozotte led SPU with 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting.

The 27-point scoring margin set a GNAC Tournament record with a 21-point win Western Washington over Alaska in 2014 established as the previous high. The 97 points scored also set a GNAC Tourney record by besting WOU's former mark of 94 set against Alaska Anchorage in 2014.
