Wolves top hosts in extras for Tournament of Champions split

TURLOCK, Calif.—After falling by a 4-3 score to Dominican (Calif.) in the opener, the Western Oregon University softball team rebounded with a 4-3 win over the host Warriors from Stanislaus State in the nightcap to wrap up opening day action at the Tournament of Champions on Friday.

With the split, Western Oregon's record stands at 14-12. The Wolves will face Holy Names (2 p.m.) and California State Monterey Bay (7 p.m.) on Saturday before closing out the tourney with two more matches on Sunday.

Game 1: Dominican def. Western Oregon, 4-3
Down 3-1 after the first inning, Western Oregon scraped together single runs in the second and third innings to tie the contest but were denied a complete comeback as Dominican used a sacrifice fly in the 6th for a 4-3 win in the opening game of the Tournament of Champions.

Without recording an out, the Penguins loaded the bases in the home half of the 1st inning and went on to plate three runners. A bases-loaded hit by pitch brought the first runner home while Alexis Chinchilla followed with a double to right for a 3-1 score. The Wolves turned to its defense to avoid additional damage as the infield turned a double play following a pop up to third to end the assault.

WOU mounted an immediate response in the top of the 2nd with Jenna Kelly pouncing for a 1-out triple where Kennedy Coy came through with an RBI single to left.

WOU continued its advance in the 3rd by loading the bases with only one out on the board. Jenna Kelly sent one runner home as the Dominican defense traded a run for an out after a grounder to second. Another grounder to second, however, ended the threat as WOU stranded a trio of runners.

After two scoreless innings, Dominican manufactured the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th with Mady Christenen doubling to left to start the frame. Christensen advanced to third on a WOU throwing error to set up the eventual game-winning swing via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tayler Munoz.

The Wolves connected on back-to-back singles to initiate the 7th inning and after a sac bunt, placed the tying run at third and the go-ahead run in scoring position. The runners, however, remained in their positions as Dominican forced a pair of fly outs to end the contest. In all, the Wolves stranded nine runners on base.

Haley Fabian was charged with the loss while tossing a complete game from the circle. Lauren Persi picked up the win after allowing seven WOU hits.

Game 2: Western Oregon def. Stanislaus State, 4-3 (8 inn.)
In a near reverse course from the opener, Western Oregon jumped out to a 3-0 lead before allowing Stanislaus State to crawl back and tie the tilt. With two no-hit innings thrown by Lizzet Dominguez, the Wolves went on to capture a 4-3 win for a Friday split as Ayanna Arceneaux came through with an RBI single in the 8th inning.

Batting with two outs in the top of the 8th, Zoe Clark beat out an infield single to shortstop to place runners at the corner for Arceneaux who then placed a single to left for the lead-changing run.

Now pitching with the lead, Dominguez retired the Warriors in order for the win.

In the start, Chandler Bishop allowed just four hits in six innings of work before turning the ball over to Dominguez. Tyler Creach led the Wolves at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a stolen base.

Cheyanne Rimer and Clark provided the RBI hits in the first for WOU with Clark's single to right brining two runs home.
