Wolves go 3-0 vs. GNAC-leading Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash.—Picking up a postponed game in Monmouth from earlier in the month, Western Oregon softball posted a rare three-win day in GNAC action with a Friday sweep over league-leading Central Washington on Friday.

Boosted by a 4-0 lead it obtained on March 18 before rain caused the postponement, Western Oregon (18-14, 6-4 GNAC) registered a 6-3 win in the opening game on Friday. The team returned with an 11-6 win in extra innings in the second game before closing out the day with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

With the trio of wins, WOU moved to within a game of Central Washington (19-8, 7-3 GNAC) for first place in the conference standings. WOU will continue its road trip with a doubleheader at Saint Martin's on Saturday. Opening pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Lacey, Washington.

Game 1 – Western Oregon def. Central Washington, 6-3
Resuming play in the 2nd inning with the score 4-0 in favor of WOU, the Wolves opened the day with a 6-3 win over CWU.

In earlier action in Monmouth, the Wolves connected on four hits and four runs in the 1st frame with Chandler Bishop and Jenna Kelly providing RBI swings before the game was called due to rain.

Moving to Ellensburg, CWU quickly halved the deficit with a 2-run 3rd but could not move closer as the Wolves added a single unearned run in the bottom half of the stanza and another via a Cheyanne Rimer RBI single in the 6th.

Despite the location shift, Haley Fabian pitched the complete game for WOU and retired the side in the 5th and 7th innings to preserve the win.

Game 2 – Western Oregon def. Central Washington, 11-6
After giving up three runs in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings, Western Oregon tagged the Wildcats for five runs in the top of the 10th for an 11-6 win in the second game of the day.

Trailing 6-3 in the 7th, CWU plated three runs to tie the game and had three chances for a walk-off win go empty. Batting with the bases loaded and no outs recorded yet, the Wildcats failed to get the ball out of the infield as reliever Lizzet Dominguez managed a strikeout and a pair of weak grounders to send the game into extras.

Both teams stranded runners in both the 8th and 9th innings before the Wolves plated a game-breaking five runs on just two hits in the 10th. After two errors kept WOU on the offensive, Zoe Clark and Kiley Lynn made the most of the miscues with back-to-back home runs for the final spread.

Dominguez earned the win with four innings of work with two hits against. Clark led WOU at the plate with a 4-for-6 line that featured three runs and three RBI. Seven different Wolves scored in the game while six different players tallied at least one RBI.

Game 3 – Western Oregon def. Central Washington, 4-3
Powered by a 4-run 3rd inning, Western Oregon held on in the late frames to complete the sweep with a 4-3 win in the Friday finale.

The Wolves belted four hits in the inning with Tyler Creach, Ryanne Huffman and Nicole Miler all driving in a teammate for a 4-1 lead.

The Wildcats scratched back with single scores in the 4th and 6th innings. CWU, however, stranded runners in four straight innings before being retired in order in the 7th.

Improving to 10-3 on the season Dominguez registered her second win of the day with a 4-inning stint. Dominguez allowed two runs on four hits before turning the ball over to Maddie McClellan. McClelland tossed the final three innings and allowed one run on two hits to earn her first save of the season.
