MONMOUTH, Ore.—Eight days after delivering a walk-off home run, Western Oregon University's Spencer Bennion sliced a bases-loaded walk-off single to give the Wolves a 6-5 win in the nightcap and secure a Saturday sweep over Saint Martin's.
With the wins, Western Oregon improved to 17-15 on the season and 17-12 in GNAC play. Saint Martin's fell to 8-30 overall and 7-23 in conference play.
WOU will close out its SMU series on Sunday with a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. opening pitch.
Game 1: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's, 12-4
Posting crooked numbers in three of the first five innings, Western Oregon blitzed Saint Martin's with a 12-4 win in the opener on Saturday.
After a scoreless first frame, the Wolves scored in four out of the next five innings to stake a 12-0 advantage. Cody Dykstra connected on a 2-run homer in the 2nd, Nyles Nygaard a 3-run double in the 4th and Connor McCord a 3-run homer in the 6th to highlight the WOU attack.
WOU starter Alex Roth allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings before being relieved in the top of the 8th.
The Saints escaped the shut out with four runs in the 8th.
Western Oregon outhit SMU 12-to-4 in the game with five extra-base hits alone. McCord went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Jacob Martinez set the table with a 3-for-4 line at the top of the order.
Game 2: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's, 6-5
Poking a single through the left side of the infield, WOU's Spencer Bennion collected his second walk-off hit in a little over a week as the Wolves completed the Saturday sweep with a 6-5 win against Saint Martin's.
The Wolves generated a 5-2 lead out of the gate, but the Saints stormed back with a 3-run 5th after Austin Feist and Adam Eskil provided back-to-back RBI swings.
Turning to reliever Jake Simmons, the Wolves made it to the bottom of the 7th without allowing another run and set up the late-inning dramatics. Nyles Nygaard and Connor McCord drew walks to lead off the 7th and put immediate pressure on the Saints. A foul out placed one out on the board before another walk, this time to
Justin Wakem, loaded the bases for the Wolves.
Pouncing on a 2-1 pitch, Bennion lifted the game-winner past the SMU defense to usher Nygaard across the plate for the winnig score.
Simmons tossed scoreless ball over the final 2 1/3 innings to earn the win. Simmons struck out two and walked one in relief for starter Gabe Benavides.
