WOU scores 30 in doubleheader sweep

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Erupting for 22 runs in the opener, Western Oregon University dropped Saint Martin's University by 22-4 and 8-6 scores to complete a four-game series sweep on Sunday.

With the results, Western Oregon improved to 19-15 on the season and 19-12 in GNAC play. With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Wolves are 1 1/2 games ahead of Central Washington for second place in the conference standings. SMU fell to 8-32 overall and 7-25 in league play.

Western Oregon will remain at home next week with five games planned in Monmouth. The Wolves will step out of conference play for a single game against Lewis-Clark State on Wednesday, April 25. Opening pitch against the Warriors is set for 2 p.m.

Continuing to the weekend, WOU will entertain Central Washington for a four-game set on April 28-29. Opening pitch for both GNAC doubleheaders is set for 12 p.m. with the Wolves' Senior Day scheduled for Sunday against the Wildcats.

Game 1: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's, 22-4
Western Oregon scored in different five innings, including a game-breaking nine runs in the 4th inning, to defeat SMU, 22-4, in the first game on Sunday.

With 13 different players recording at least one successful swing, the Wolves clubbed a season-high 26 hits in the game. Jared McDonald was perfect at the dish with a 4-for-4 line that included one RBI and three runs scored. Nyles Nygaard went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Hunter Johnson also had a three-hit day while Jacob Martinez, Jay Leverett, Connor McCord, Justin Wakem and Griffey Halle and Cody Dykstra all collected two hits in the thrashing.

The team's 22 runs were the most since the squad posted a 23-run performance at San Francisco State on Feb. 7, 2004. The 26 hits are tied for the second most in team history during the program's NCAA DII-era.

Jacob Fricke picked up the win with a 6-inning outing.

Game 2: Western Oregon def. Saint Martin's, 8-6
Down 6-1 heading to the bottom of the 3rd, Western Oregon scored the game's final seven runs to close out the four-game sweep of Saint Martin's.

The Wolves plated three runs in the home half of the 3rd to make it a 6-4 contest and took the lead two frames later with a four-run stanza.

A Griffey Halle double tied the game in the 5th as the blast allowed Nyles Nygaard and Jared McDonald to score. Moments later the Wolves took their first lead of the game on a Cody Dykstra double to plate Halle. Jacob Martinez closed out the onslaught with a single to right to score Dykstra.

The Saints took the early lead on a 3-run homer by Adam Eskil in the 1st inning.

Adding to his 4-for-4 opening game, McDonald went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two RBI and two runs scored.

Kolby Bales earned the win in a relief appearance. Bales pitched two shutout innings with four strikeouts and no hits allowed. Koty Fallon and Nick Parr closed out the final two frames with Parr registering the save.
