Wolves split on second day of West Region Challenge

OAKLAND, Ore.—Rebounding from an early 3-0 loss to undefeated Stanislaus State, Western Oregon defeated Hawaii Pacific, 3-0, in the late match to finish the two-day DII West Region Showcase with a 3-1 record.

With the results, Western Oregon moved to 3-4 on the season. The Wolves will open GNAC play on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home match against Concordia University.  

Match 2: Western Oregon def. Hawaii Pacific, 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19)
Closing out the DII West Region Showcase, Western Oregon earned its first sweep of the season with a 3-0 win over Hawaii Pacific.

The Wolves hit a season-high .446 in the match with Jenna Compton notching a team-high 12 kills in an efficient 16 attempts for a .750 attack rate. Teammate Sianna DeCarli also topped the .500 mark with six kills and one error in nine chances (.556). Marialla Vandenkooy added 11 kills while Morgan Haskett matched DeCarli's six terminations.

Leila Holt and Maddie Mehciz set up the offense with a combined 39 assists.

Match 1: Stanislaus State def. Western Oregon, 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 26-24)
Despite improving with each set, Western Oregon fell 3-0 against Stanislaus State in the morning match on Saturday. With the result, Stanislaus State remained perfect on the season with a 7-0 record. WOU fell to 2-4 overall.  

The Warriors hit .238 as a team while holding the Wolves to .122 in the match.

After two quick defeats, WOU held pace for the majority of the third set. The Wolves generated a 23-22 lead on an ace off a Leila Holt serve, but the teams traded points before Stanislaus used back-to-back Mya Marshall swings to close out the match.  

Seven different Wolves recorded at least one kill with senior Mariella Vandenkooy leading the way with eight. Stanislaus State posted 11 aces in the match with Ramey Gardner accounting for six occurrences.

The Wolves outblocked the Warriors 7 to 6 with Vandenkooy and Morgan Haskett each contributing with four block assists.
