FOREST GROVE, Ore.—Despite outshooting its opponent 22 to 3, the Western Oregon University soccer team needed a golden goal by
Kennedy Clay in the 93rd minute to defeat Pacific University, 2-1, on Monday.
With the result, Western Oregon improved to 2-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in overtime contests as three of the team's five matches have went to extra sessions.
Pacific made the most of its limited chances by scoring in the 8th minute of play when Kira Negerte found the side netting for a 1-0 lead.
WOU outshot the Boxers 7 to 3 in the first half but could not find the equalizer before the break.
It took until the 73rd minute for the Wolves to break though as
Sydney Thomas finished from 10 yards out after receiving a cross by
Amber Whitmore.
In addition to outshooting the home side, WOU registered a 5 to 0 edge in corner kick opportunities. Two of those corner chances occurred in the closing minutes of regulation where
Alexie Morris and
Isabelle Creighton each registered a close-quarter shot attempt that would have prevented overtime.
Continuing their attack, Clay's game winner came just 94 seconds into the first overtime session. Clay used a slight touch to settle the cross from
Melinda Ortega and fired into the far side of the net for the 2-1 win.
Pacific goalkeeper Kali Barber kept the Boxers in the game until the end with nine saves on the evening while the suffocating WOU defense allowed just the single shot on goal for
Alex Qualls to earn the win with her work in between the posts.
The Wolves will return to action at Simon Fraser on Saturday, Sept. 15. Opening kick for the GNAC opener is set for 3 p.m. in Burnaby, British Columbia.
