Box Score BURNABY, B.C.—Jumping out to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team never trailed en route to a 69-65 road win at Simon Fraser University on Thursday evening.
Four different players scored in the opening minutes for Western Oregon (5-6, 2-3 GNAC) to build the quick double-digit lead.
Simon Fraser (6-6, 2-3 GNAC) closed to within seven points at the break with the score resting at 34-27, but the Clan could not overcome the early deficit as the Wolves fired at a 49.0 percent clip from the floor for the contest.
The win snaps Western Oregon's four-game losing streak to SFU and a seven-game slide while playing the Clan in Canada.
An
Olivia Denton 3-pointer in the third quarter, the team's first of the game, gave the Wolves a 45-34 advantage. The gap swelled to as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter with
Teresa Acock hitting a 3-poniter and
Shariah Green following with a layup.
Down by 14 points with 90 seconds to play, SFU connected on a trio of shots from distance to finish with the four-point loss.
Three WOU players reached double figures in the scoring column.
DeLonge notched a game-high 16 points and 11 rebound to end the night with her second 'double-double' of the season. Her rebound total matched a career high.
Ali Nelke added 14 points, three rebounds and five assists while Denton contributed with 13 points and eight boards.
Sophie Swant and Emma Kramer led SFU with 13 points each.
Western Oregon will continue its trip north with a Saturday contest at Western Washington University. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. in Bellingham, Wash.
