MONMOUTH, Ore.-Firing at a season-best 53.4 percent from the floor, Western Oregon routed Alaska Fairbanks, 79-50, in GNAC women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Western Oregon (6-8, 3-5 GNAC) connected on four of its first five attempts to build a 10-0 lead and never trailed in the game to split the week's series against the two conference Alaska programs.
Two days after setting a career high with 23 points against Alaska Anchorage, WOU'sÂ
Natalie DeLonge was once again uncontrollable down low by topping that performance with a 24-point outburst. DeLonge was 10-of-16 from the field to lead all players and finished one rebound shy of her third 'double-double' of the season.
Alaska (3-11, 0-8 GNAC) managed to cut the early deficit to five points (16-11) late in the first quarter, but the Wolves rattled off the final five points of the first for a 21-11 lead.
Western Oregon used a 16-point spree, nine of which came from DeLonge, in the second quarter to extend the advantage to as many as 22 points before the halftime break.
Junior guardÂ
Olivia Denton pulled in a career-high and game-high 10 rebounds whileÂ
Teresa Acock set a WOU personal record with five assists. Sophomore guardÂ
Keyonna Jones added 15 points, six assists and three boards.
The Wolves ended the day with 21 assists on 31 field goals.
"I'm really happy for our team, they really buckled down with our focus points and played well together," WOU head coachÂ
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "Nat and Keyonna got us going early and everyone made positive contributions coming off the bench."
Alaska was led by Marian Wamsley with 11 points and three rebounds while teammate Ashlie Blackburn chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.
"I thought we were more efficient with our shots than we have been and we did a good job of finding the open teammate. Teresa had some great passes and Rachel (Rogers) did a great job being aggressive on both ends," Howard-Carpenter said.
Western Oregon will have a quick turnaround next week with a Tuesday contest at Concordia University in Portland. The Wolves then make the long trip to Montana State Billings for a Jan. 26 affair against the Yellowjackets.
