Western Oregon claims historic win over Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Western Oregon Wolves dealt Central Washington a record-book loss on Thursday, dismantling the Wildcats 89-57 at Nicholson Pavilion.

It was the largest win in the series for Western Oregon (14-4, 7-2 GNAC), topping last year's 30-point victory by two for the biggest margin of victory over Central Washington (9-8, 3-6 GNAC) during their NCAA-era matchups stretching back to 2001.

Western Oregon came out of the gates on an 8-0 run over the first 2:07 of the game, getting five of those points from Dalven Brushier. The junior finished with a game-high 17 points, seven rebounds and one assist on 7-of-8 shooting and 3-of-4 from three.

That lead stretched to as many as 28 points in the first half with the Wolves going into the locker room leading 53-28. The 53 first-half points was the second-highest total for a half against a conference opponent this season, falling just shy of the 54 scored in the first half three weeks ago at Alaska.

Brushier was one of three players for WOU to finish the first half in doubles figures along with Kaleb Warner's 11 and Etan Collins' 10 points.

Darius Lubom dealt out an impressive eight assists in the first half to help spur the offense. The sophomore finished the game with nine points, eight assists and four rebounds.

The Wildcats had trouble stopping the hot shooting of Western Oregon, failing to hold the Wolves below 50 percent from the field on the night. WOU finished 52.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range on one of their best shooting nights of the season. The 14-of-28 3-pointers made was the fourth time since Dec. 29 that WOU has made 13 or more three's in a game and the eighth time they have met that bar this season.

Conversely, Central Washington was never able to get their shooting in a rhythm, going 10-of-27 from the field for a 37 percent shooting night, finishing more than 11 percent below their season average.

The second half played slightly closer, but still saw a distinct advantage for the Wolves as they stretched their lead out by another seven points to cement the historic win.

CWU's leading scorer on the season, Gamaun Boykin, was held to a sparse five points in the game, finishing with just four field goal attempts and getting three of his points at the line.

All 11 players that saw the court for the Wolves were able to register points and 10 of them pulled in a rebound. Seven of those players finished with at least eight points or four rebounds while three scored in double figures.

Next up for Western Oregon is a meeting with Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho on Jan. 26. Tipoff with the Nighthawks is set for 6 p.m. PST.
