FAIRBANKS, Alaska—After being held to under 60 points for the first time this season on Thursday, the Western Oregon offense reemerged with an 97-80 win at the University of Alaska on Saturday.
Western Oregon (12-3, 3-1 GNAC) missed its first jumper but connected on its next eight attempts from the floor, including a trio of 3-pointers, to stun the home team with an early 20-5 lead.
Darius Lubom scored the first four points for the Wolves while
Kaleb Warner,
Etan Collins and
Dalven Brushier each converted from deep after only four minutes of play.
Alaska (4-3, 1-4 GNAC) manage to cut the deficit in half with Michael Kluting helping the team put together a mini run, but the Wolves quickly retaliated with its second spurt and extended its advantage to as many as 20 points before the break.
Western Oregon shot a sizzling 61.9 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play and made more than half of its attempts from deep by going 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Nanooks never got closer than 14 points (77-63) in the second half as WOU continued to pile up buckets after the break.
Shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-9 from 3-point range,
Riley Hawken led all scorers with 23 points. Hawken also delivered a career high seven assists on the night.
Warner (14 points), Lubom (13 points) and Collins (13 points) all reached double figures for the Wolves.
Spencer Sweet paced the Nanooks with 20 points and was followed by 18 from Kluting.
The Wolves will make the long trip home to find a quick turnaround for their next contest by hosting Concordia University on Tuesday. Opening tip against the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m. inside the New P.E. Gymnasium.
