Wolves dominate shots, but draw with Nighthawks

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon soccer team fought the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks to a scoreless draw on Saturday, picking up a point and closing out a run of five straight matches at WOU Soccer Field.

Despite the tie, Western Oregon (6-4-3, 3-2-2 GNAC) dominated in the shot column, out-pacing Northwest Nazarene (5-6-2, 2-3-2 GNAC) 13-4 in shots on the game. That included eight shots to the one of the Nighthawks in the first half.

Of the 13 shots, five would be on goal for the Wolves, forcing NNU goalkeeper Alexis Montoya to make several impressive stops. Junior Alyssa Tomasini led the Wolves with four shots, three coming on goal. Isabelle Creighton added on three while Danielle Vanord and Kaili Brundage each had two. The 13 total shots for the Wolves was the most in a game since Sept. 28 when they tacked 22 on NNU in their last meeting, a game that also ended in a draw, 1-1.

"I was really proud of the effort we played with today," said Western Oregon head coach Kacey Bingham. "I think we produced several quality scoring opportunities and were unlucky to find a goal."

Western Oregon held a large advantage in corner kicks as well, totaling 14 on Saturday while allowing just two to the Nighthawks.

"The back line did an amazing job limiting NNU's attack," added Bingham. "It was important not to get a loss today. Every point we can get is really important."

WOU has garnered points in five of their last six matches and seven of their previous nine.

The Wolves now face four straight road games of their final five regular season matches. Next up they visit Concordia on Thursday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PDT at Tuominen Yard.
