Volleyball returns home facing two streaking teams

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon volleyball team returns home for six of their final eight regular season matches, hosting Seattle Pacific this Thursday, Oct. 31, and the Saint Martin's Saints Saturday, Nov. 2, at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon (3-16, 1-11 GNAC) recently finished a four-game road swing which included visits last week to Simon Fraser and No. 6 Western Washington. The Wolves fell 3-1 to the Clan and were swept by the Vikings to run their current losing streak to seven consecutive games.

Sianna DeCarli led WOU in kills in both matches last week, totaling 20 for the week. Delaney Smith bolstered the defense up front with two solo blocks and four block assists in the two matches.

As a team, Western Oregon is averaging a .165 hit percentage over their 64 sets this season. Their total set number, however, is eight lower than any other team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They also bring an average of 12.22 digs per set, 1.77 blocks and 10.69 kills into the week.

Seattle Pacific (9-11, 6-6 GNAC) is currently riding the longest winning streak in the GNAC, winning their last four matches to pull to a .500 record in conference play.

Senior Gabby Oddo is averaging 3.41 kills per set, good for 3rd in the conference and junior Maddie Batiste is not far behind at 3.39 kills per set, good for 6th.

WOU is 9-26 against SPU all-time. The Falcons won 3-0 earlier this season in Seattle for their fifth straight win in the series. WOU's last win over SPU was a 3-1 victory Oct. 22, 2016, in Monmouth. The Wolves are 6-11 at home in the series.

Saint Martin's (0-21, 0-12 GNAC) remains without a win on the season entering this week. Their 3-1 loss against Northwest Nazarene Oct. 26 ended a run of six straight sweeps dating back to Oct. 5.

SMU has a .091 hitting percentage for the season, while their opponents have posted a .262 mark in the category. The Saints are led in kills by two freshmen, Kylie Coon (2.53 per set) and Mackenzie Carter (2.98 per set).

WOU is 25-4 against SMU all-time, winning 3-1 earlier this season in Lacey. The Wolves have won 18 of the last 19 meetings dating back to Sept. 8, 2005. WOU is 12-2 at home in the series.

The Wolves' matchup Thursday against the Falcons is set for a 7 p.m. first serve while Saturday's game will begin at 2 p.m. PDT at NPE Gym. Both matches will have live stats and video available here.
