Tomasini paces Wolves to third straight win

BURNABY, B.C. – The Western Oregon soccer team guaranteed a winning road trip on Thursday night when they breezed past the Simon Fraser Clan, riding two goals and an assist from Alyssa Tomasini for a 3-1 win at Terry Fox Field.

Winning their third straight match and garnering points in eight of their last nine matches, Western Oregon (9-4-3, 6-2-2 GNAC) pulled within one point of second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, moving to 20 points in the GNAC table with two regular season games left to play.

Tomasini first struck 15 minutes into the night when she trickled her sixth goal of the season past the head of Simon Fraser (1-11-1, 1-8-0 GNAC) goalie Nicole Anderson. The goal was Tomasini's first in nearly a month, last scoring Oct. 5 against Seattle Pacific.

"I would say today was our best performance on the road," said Tomasini after her second five-point game of the year. "Our energy was high and we held a positive attitude throughout the whole game. Our back line did an especially good job keeping their forwards out of the attack. I'm proud of everyone's work ethic today and I feel like we went out there and gave it our all."

The junior striker found net again 12 minutes later when she capitalized on a feed from Selene Konyn.

"Today was a great day for this team," said Konyn, who had a goal and an assist Thursday, of the Wolves' third straight win. "We came out with fire and we were able to get a goal in the first 15 which has been something we've strived for this entire season. We played with confidence and composure. We're hoping to carry this positive energy into the next game."

The Wolves out-shot the Clan 8-3 in the first half and 13-10 in the match, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Kennedy Clay delivered two of the shots, one of which came on target.

SFU's lone score came in the 63rd minute when Giuliana Zaurrini was able to sneak a shot under the crossbar for her fourth goal of the year.

Konyn didn't take long to respond for Western Oregon, getting a feed from Tomasini on their second connection of the night for a top corner goal to extend the lead back out to two at 3-1.

"It's always great to get a win on the road but even better when our attack shows up the way we did," said Western Oregon head coach Kacey Bingham. "It was great to see our reserves' contributions today. This was an important game in our run for trying to make it to the GNAC tournament. We know we need to focus on one game at a time."

Next up, the Wolves play their final road game of the 2019 regular season Saturday, Nov. 2, at Seattle Pacific in a game which could very well decide the second seed in the GNAC Championships. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PDT.
