Soccer Returns Home to Open Five-Game Homestand This Saturday Versus Seattle Pacific

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University soccer team has certainly spent a lot of time out on the road to start the season. After traveling to Colorado, California, Montana and Idaho the Wolves now return home for the next couple of weeks opening up a five-game homestand this Saturday at 11 a.m. against Seattle Pacific at the WOU Soccer Field. The game will also be a Red Out contest with the first 50 WOU students with ID receiving a free t-shirt.

WOU (3-3-2, 0-1-1 GNAC) went 0-1-1 this past week to start Great Northwest Athletic Conference play falling just short to MSU Billings (1-0) and then battled back to tie Northwest Nazarene (1-1). The goal against Northwest Nazarene was originally ruled an own goal, but after further review Selene Konyn was credited with the goal off her corner kick.

On the season the Wolves have scored 13 goals, firing 115 shots with 43 landing on goal. Opponents have tallied eight goals, taking 56 shots with 29 landing on net. WOU has dominated corner kicks this year taking 62 to just 21 for opponents.

Individually Alyssa Tomasini leads the team in points with 10, recording four goals and a pair of assists. She's started all eight games this season and also has a game-winning goal. Konyn is second on the team with eight points putting away three goals and has a pair of assists. She's also started all eight games and has a game-winning goal. Isabelle Creighton adds six points with two goals and two assists having started all eight games. She also has a game-winning goal. Kaili Brundage has started all eight games and has four points with a pair of goals. Kaitlin Poe, Jacky Beristain and Danielle VanOrd have started all eight games and each has two points with Poe and Beristain tallying goals and VanOrd with two assists. Nikki Hoey, Hannah Rispler and Melinda Ortega have all added an assist. Others to play in all eight games this season include Rispler, Kennedy Clay, Erika Moreno Gonzalez, Malia Napoleon and Alex Qualls. Beristain and Napoleon have logged the minutes back on defense with each playing 765. Konyn has played 734 minutes, Poe with 732 and Qualls rounds out the five with over 700 minutes checking in at 720. In goal, Qualls has started all eight games holding a 1.00 goals against average with 21 saves and a 72.4 save percentage. She's been a part of two shutouts with coming against Hawaii Pacific and the other was a combined shutout in the season opening win over Western Colorado.

WOU ranks high in the GNAC and nationally in several categories including second in the GNAC and 82nd nationally in assists per game (1.38), first in the GNAC in points per game (4.63), second in the GNAC in scoring offense (1.63), first in the GNAC and 57th nationally in total assists (11), second in the GNAC and 80th nationally in total goals (13), first in the GNAC and 77th nationally in total points (37) and 79th nationally in goals-against average (.942).
Individually, Qualls leads the GNAC and is 14th nationally in minutes played and is third in the GNAC in both goals against average and total saves. Creighton, Konyn and Tomasini are all tied for fourth in the GNAC with their game-winning goals. Tomasini is third in the GNAC in both goals per game (0.50) and in points per game (1.25), she is also second in the GNAC and 86th nationally in total goals and second in the GNAC in total points. Creighton, Konyn, Tomasini and VanOrd are all tied for fifth in the GNAC in total assists. Konyn is fourth in the GNAC in both total goals and total points.

Seattle Pacific played last night against Concordia in Seattle and picked up the 3-0 victory. The Falcons are off to a 5-4 overall record and 3-0 mark in GNAC action having also defeated Northwest Nazarene (3-0) and Saint Martin's (2-0) to start conference play.

Seattle Pacific has scored 13 goals, taking 132 shots landing 50 on goal. Opponents have recorded seven goals on 87 shots with 36 landing on net. Opponents have taken 37 corner kicks to 27 for Seattle Pacific.

Sierra Smith leads the offense with three goals and an assist for seven points. Claire Neder adds six points on three goals. Sophia Chilczuk has five points with two goals and an assist. Chloe Gellhaus adds two goals. In net, Riley Travis has started six games making 14 saves and holds a 0.78 goals against average with a .778 save percentage. Kaylia Nelson has also played in four games and starting three making 15 saves and has a 0.76 goals against average with a .833 save percentage. Each have a pair of shutouts. Mariah Alexander leads the team in minutes played logging 700 minutes on defense.

Seattle Pacific has controlled the series between the teams having won the last 11 meetings. The teams tied back in 2012 in Monmouth (1-1) and after that Seattle Pacific started an 11-game winning streak. The last win for the Wolves was in 2002 when they picked up a 3-1 victory in Monmouth. Since 2001, WOU is 2-14-1 against Seattle Pacific in Monmouth.

Last year, the Falcons took the only meeting in Seattle (6-1), while the last meeting in Monmouth back in 2017 was a close battle in Seattle before the Falcons claimed the 1-0 victory. Seattle Pacific ended up advancing to the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament last year falling to GNAC opponent Concordia (2-1).
