ROHNERT, Calif. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team takes to the road for the first time during the 2019-20 season this week, visiting Sonoma State Friday, Nov. 15, before a neutral site matchup with Chico State on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Wolves' Den as a part of the CCAA/GNAC Challenge.
Western Oregon (1-1) continues their non-conference schedule after visits from the Academy of Art and Cal State East Bay last week. After falling by nine to the Urban Knights, the Wolves bounced back with a solid 65-49 win over the Pioneers to even their record and secure their first win of the season.
WOU has a trio of players averaging double figures in scoring through the first two games.
Shariah Green and
Tresai McCarver have a 13.0 points per game mark while
Keyonna Jones is right behind them, averaging 12.0 a game.
Rachel Rogers has pulled down a team-high 7.5 rebounds a night, adding on another 8.5 points of scoring as well.
Western enters the week shooting 35.8 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from 3-point range. They are averaging 64.0 points as a team while allowing just 60.5 a game.
Sonoma State (2-0) will be playing its first official home game of the season on Friday night. The Seawolves won each of their first two games by at least nine, taking down Dominican and Notre Dame de Namur on the road.
The Seawolves went 11-15 during the 2018-19 season, compiling a 9-13 conference record. They were eliminated in the first round of the CCAA tournament to end their year.
WOU is 1-1 against Sonoma State in their two meetings. SSU won the last meeting Nov. 19, 2016, 74-59 in Chico, Calif. The Wolves' lone win was Nov. 25, 2000, 63-55, in Arcata, Calif. It will be their first-ever meeting in Rohnert.
Chico State (2-1) has already logged a game this week, posting a 71-47 win over Holy Names at home on Tuesday. They will take on the Concordia Cavaliers on Friday before their meeting with the Wolves the following afternoon.
After a slow offensive start to the year, posting just 49 points in their two-point victory over Notre Dame de Namur in their opener, the Wildcats have steadily increased their scoring throughout their three games. Their only loss of the year was an 87-69 defeat at the hands of Dominican University of California.
WOU is 0-7 against Chico State all-time. Their last meeting came on Nov. 18, 2016, when the Wildcats escaped with a 70-67 win. It was the first time one of their meetings had been decided by less than 10 points. It will be their third neutral site meeting of the series.
Tipoff Friday against the Seawolves is set for 2 p.m. PST while Saturday's contest will take place at noon.
