MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team returns home this week following their first road trip of the 2019-20 season to host Texas A&M International Friday, Nov. 29, and Southwest Minnesota State Saturday, Nov. 30, at NPE Gym. Both games will be free admission!
Western Oregon (2-2) has enjoyed a nearly two-week break since facing Sonoma State and Chico State earlier this month in California. The Wolves split their trip south, topping the Seawolves 60-52 before falling to the Wildcats 50-46 in their most recent outing.
Shariah Green has led the Wolves' offense through the first four games, averaging 11.5 points a night and hitting double figures in three of her four appearances. She is shooting a team-high 47.1 percent from the field while also connecting from deep, going 6-for-13 from 3-point range. Five players are averaging 7.5 points or more per game for WOU.
Defensively, the Wolves are currently the only team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference allowing fewer than 60 points per game, holding opponents to just 55.8 points and a conference-best 36.1 percent opponent field goal mark. Opponents have scored more than 52 points just once and are averaging only 50.3 points over the last three games.
Texas A&M International (3-3) had a three-game winning streak snapped last Saturday, falling 80-68 to Oklahoma Christian University. The Dust Devils have yet to play a home game this season, not getting a chance to play in Laredo until Dec. 14. The Wolves will be the first of two GNAC foes they face, taking on Saint Martin's in Lacey two days after their trip to Monmouth.
The Dust Devils offer a high-scoring opposition to Western, averaging 76.2 points per game and scoring 97 or more twice this year. Three players are averaging at least 10 points a game for TAMIU, led by the 16.0 of Josselin Geer. She is shooting 50.7 percent from the field on 73 attempts and 36.4 percent from three.
Friday represents the first-ever meeting of the Wolves and Dust Devils.
Southwest Minnesota State (3-1) also enters the weekend having just had a three-game winning streak snapped. Before coming to Monmouth, the Mustangs make a stop in Portland to face the Concordia Cavaliers on Friday.
SMSU had not allowed more than 53 points to an opponent in their first three games before getting burned for 100 on Nov. 20 by Sioux Falls.
Caleigh Rodning averages more than eight points and eight rebounds a game for the Mustangs, but has yet to post a double-double. Meleah Reinhart holds a scoring average of 17.3, posting a season-high 26 points her last time out.
WOU has not played Southwest Minnesota State during their NCAA history.
