Women's basketball hosts four-team tournament

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team will begin their regular season schedule this week, hosting three teams for a run of four games in two days between Nov. 8 and 9 at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon will play the Academy of Art Friday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in their first official game of the 2019 season. On Saturday, Nov. 9, they face off against Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m. PST to finish off the weekend.

The Wolves played an exhibition last Saturday against Pacific University, falling 73-68 to the Boxers in Monmouth. Three players finished in double figures in the unofficial opener, led by the 14 points each of Tresai McCarver and Keyonna Jones. Newcomer Ahdra Klingler added another 11 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Jones added on six rebounds, five assists and five steals to her night in 30 minutes of play.

WOU shot 35.6 percent from the field as team, including 29.2 percent on 3-point shooting. Defensively, the Wolves were able to force 16 turnovers, committing 14 of their own, but were out-rebounded 44-34 by Pacific.

Friday will be the first game of the season for the Urban Knights. They are coming off a 4-21 season during the 2018-19 campaign.

Western is 0-5 all-time against the Academy of Art, last playing them Nov. 10, 2018, in Hayward, Calif., when they fell 77-65 to the Urban Knights. This will be the second time the Wolves have hosted them.

Cal State East Bay opened their year with two exhibition games earlier in the month, falling 79-56 to UC Davis on Nov. 1 before topping Menlo College 89-58 on Nov. 2. They take on the Cavaliers on Friday in their first official game before facing the Wolves on Saturday. The Pioneers held a 14-16 overall record a year ago.

WOU is 1-3 all-time against Cal State East Bay. The Wolves' lone win in the series came on Nov. 13, 2016, in Monmouth in one of the two visits East Bay has made to NPE Gym.

Fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference team Concordia University takes on CSEB on Friday at 4 p.m. while they face the Academy of Art at 1 p.m. PST  at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon will begin their conference schedule Dec. 5 when they visit the Alaska Nanooks. Their first home GNAC contest is scheduled for Jan. 2 at NPE Gym against Western Washington.

Live video and stats will be available for both games Friday. Live stats will be available for the first game Saturday, while WOU's game against Cal State East Bay at 3 p.m. on Saturday will have both video and stats.
