Pitchers shine again in WOU win

PORTLAND, Ore.—After giving up the go-ahead run late in the game, a sacrifice fly by Patrick Chung in the bottom of the 7th boosted Western Oregon to a 3-2 win over Concordia University in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

Playing as the home team at Concordia's (2-7) Porter Park, Western Oregon (2-0) used a combination of four pitchers to stymie the CU bats.

Jacob Fricke got the staring nod on the bump for the Wolves and struck out five batters in 4.0 innings of work. Fricke did not allow a hit and walked just one before turning the ball over to Grant Fisher

The Wolves gave Fricke a single run in the bottom of the 4th as Griffey Halle made the dash for home after a grounder off the bat of Connor McCord. Starting the play at second, Halle took two bases on the play for the opening run of the game after the Cavaliers failed at the turn for an inning-ending double play.

Turning to the pen, the Wolves got two more shutout innings from Fisher, who struck out four against one hit. Fisher struck out the side in the 5th while CU's first hit of the game came in the opening at-bat of the 6th with Trevor Huddleston slicing a single to left.

The Cavs finally got on the board in the top of the 7th with three straight hits, including an RBI triple to left by Dominic Embody for the tying run and a go-ahead single by Jake WIkel.

The Wolves immediately retook the lead, however, as Thomas Ahlstrom led off the home half of the frame with a walk and was followed by an RBI double from Justin Wakem. Three batters later, Chung provided the eventual game-winning score by lifting a sacrifice fly to deep left to plate pinch runner Bryce Tilton.

Austin Crowson sent the Cavaliers down in order in the 8th before Gabe Benavides closed out the game with a 1-2-3 finale. In all, the four WOU pitchers tallied 14 strikeouts against two walks.

Western Oregon will return to action on March 2-3 when it hosts a four-game GNAC series against Montana State Billings.
