Women's basketball snaps slide with win over Seattle Pacific

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon Wolves snapped a six-game losing streak on Thursday with a 60-53 win over Seattle Pacific at NPE Gym.

The seven-point victory was the first for Western Oregon (8-17, 5-14 GNAC) since Feb. 2 when they topped Central Washington on the road and their first over Seattle Pacific (8-18, 7-12 GNAC) since Jan. 22, 2015.

"Our energy was great tonight and we hit a lot of our game goals," said Western Oregon head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter. "Despite shooting poorly in the first half, I thought we refocused ourselves and got better looks at the basket in the second."

The game started with a long offensive drought on both sides. The first points of the game came on a pair of Olivia Denton free throws over three minutes into the game. Western Oregon then came up with the first field goal of the game after five minutes had expired. Trailing 4-0, Seattle Pacific was held scoreless for the first 6:11 of the game before they went on a 6-0 run and eventually took a one-point lead to the second quarter.

After shooting just 11.8 percent from the field in the first quarter, the Wolves went 7-of-18 in the second to out-score the Falcons 17-15 and take a one-point lead into the locker room.

Natalie DeLonge picked up her third straight double-double and her seventh of the season on Thursday, putting together 17 points and 12 rebounds in 34 minutes of work. She was 6-of-13 shooting.
SPU freshman Ashley Alter scored a game-high 18 points off the bench, finishing 6-of-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from 3-point range.

With the Falcons leading by one heading to the fourth quarter, the Wolves out-scored them 18-10 in the final period, relying on a big quarter from the outside. WOU shot 2-for-15 from deep through the first three quarters before finishing the game with a 3-for-4 fourth.

Keyonna Jones scored five of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. She finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.

"Nat and Keyonna were fairly steady the whole game," said Howard-Carpenter. "They played well off each other tonight. Ronnie gave us a good lift off the bench, especially in the second half when we needed it."

Ronnie Harris delivered two clutch 3-pointers later in the game to extend the Wolves' lead. She finished with six points and five rebounds, getting all six of her points beyond the arc.

"We made some mistakes down the stretch, but I thought we did a great job of answering and not letting one turn into two and letting our lead slip," added Howard-Carpenter. "When we take care of the ball, we give ourselves a chance that's something we've been working on."

Next up for the Wolves is their final game of the season Saturday when they host Saint Martin's. Tipoff against the Saints is set for 5:15 p.m. March 2 at NPE Gym.
