Wolves drop No. 7 Chico State to leave Vegas with perfect record

LAS VEGAS—Using a late-inning rally for the third straight game, Western Oregon University defeated No. 7-ranked Chico State, 7-2, in the final game of the Desert Stinger on Sunday afternoon.

Down 2-0 heading to the top of the 6th inning, Western Oregon (3-0) scored seven runs in the final two frames to leave the tournament as one of only three teams to finish undefeated.

San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino also went 3-0 over the weekend. Western Oregon outscored its opponents 21-10 in the three games. CSU San Bernardino captured the tournament crown with a tie-breaking 34-5 run differential.

Starting the rally in the 6th, Ryanne Whitaker beat out the throw for an infield single and a sacrifice by Ayanna Arceneaux quickly gave WOU a runner in scoring position.

In an immediate payoff, Mariah Deleon delivered with an RBI single to center for the first run while Cheyanne Rimer followed with a blast off the fence in right field to knot the game at 2-2

After working to load the bases, the Wolves received the go-ahead run on an error off the bat of Kennedy Coy that allowed Rimer to scamper home.

The Wolves went on to collect four more runs on four hits in the top of the 7th inning for a sizable cushion for reliever Maddie Mayer. Jenna Kelly provided the biggest hit in the 7th inning with a double to right-center field to plate teammates Logan Carlos and Sydney Bowers.

Mayer, the complete game winner in a 9-inning affair on Friday, pitched 4.0 innings of no-hit ball to garner her second win of the weekend. Mayer struck out four and walked only one in the outing.

The Wolves outhit Chico State 8-to-4 with eight different players registering a hit in the game.

WOU will return to action on Feb. 15-17 with six games schedule at the Dixie State Tournament in St. George, Utah.
