PORTLAND, Ore. – The Concordia Cavaliers outscored Western Oregon by eight in the second half on Tuesday to overcome a halftime deficit and top the Wolves, 77-72 at LCEF Court.
Picking up their first win over Western Oregon (16-6, 9-4 GNAC) in almost two years, Concordia (8-13, 3-10 GNAC) rode a hot-shooting second half to the victory.
In a game that featured five ties and 15 lead changes, the Cavaliers never led by more than five, a mark they only got to in the closing moments Tuesday.
Western Oregon took a 32-29 lead into the half, led by the 11 points of senior
Kaleb Warner. He finished the game with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting including three made 3-pointers. He added on two rebounds and two assists as well.
The halftime lead came after cold shooting from beyond the arc as WOU went 1-for-11 from deep to open the contest.
After shooting 41.7 percent from the field in the first half, the Cavaliers offense kicked into another gear after the break to score 48 points in the second half.
Jarrett Gray scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the way, helping the Cavs to a 60 percent field goal clip coming out of the locker room. CU also shot 62.5 percent from deep, going 5-for-8 on 3-point attempts in the period.
The Wolves led by as many as seven in the second half, holding a 47-40 advantage with 14:48 left in the game. That lead lasted until the 7:54 mark before the Cavs grabbed their first advantage of the second half.
After committing just five turnovers in the first half, the Wolves were plagued by 11 giveaways in the second.
Trailing 70-68 with just over one minute remaining, Concordia closed on a 9-2 run over the final 1:17 to pull out the win. Gray and Hunter Sweet each hit critical 3-pointers during the stretch while Cody Starr converted a pair of free throws with four seconds left to seal the win.
Darius Lubom finished with 13 points for WOU in 27 minutes, pulling in three rebounds and dishing out one assist.
For WOU, it is just the second loss all-time to Concordia and snaps a three-game winning streak over CU.
