MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon baseball team completed the four-game weekend sweep of the Concordia Cavaliers on Sunday with a pair of wins, 12-1, 8-0 at WOU Baseball Field.
It was the first four-game sweep of the season for the Wolves, helping to expand their lead to two games in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings over second place Montana State Billings.
Western Oregon (11-3, 9-3 GNAC) ran their consecutive scoreless innings over Concordia (6-15, 4-8 GNAC) to 19.2 through game three of the series after an outstanding start on the hill from lefty
Jacob Fricke. After the Cavs were held without a run through 15 consecutive innings on Saturday, Fricke (1-0) had a no-hit shutout rolling through 4.2 frames Sunday afternoon. He threw a season-high 6.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. It was also a season-high in strikeouts for Fricke.
Blayze Arcano paced the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, collecting a double, one run scored and five RBI. The centerfielder singled in two in the second and emptied the bases for a three-RBI double in the fifth. Arcano finished the day 5-for-6 combined between the two games to raise his batting average to .378 on the year.
Western Oregon posted two four-run innings in game one, putting the win away with a four-run eighth that featured a two-RBI single from
Joshua McIntyre.
Grant Fisher and
Cam Walker added on solid work from the Wolves' bullpen, combining to retire all eight batters they saw over the final 2.2 innings.
Game two provided the second shutout victory for WOU in as many days, this time coming from the arm of lefty
Gabe Benavides. Benavides (1-1) tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out five batters. It was his second complete game shutout while at Western Oregon, both of which have come against Concordia.
Freshman
Jacob Maiben cranked his first collegiate home run in the second inning to open up the scoring. The right fielder delivered a three-run blast off Trevor Huddleston for his first of two hits in the game. He finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBI.
The Western Oregon pitching staff allowed just three runs over the 32 innings played this weekend, helping WOU to out-score the Cavs 38-3 in four games. After allowing two runs in the first inning of game one Saturday, the Wolves' pitching staff surrendered one run over the following 31 innings.
The Wolves head back on the road next week for a four-game series against Northwest Nazarene March 22 and 23. First pitch Friday in game one of the series is set for 3 p.m. MDT in Nampa, Idaho.
