WOU tops Simon Fraser before heading to GNAC Tournament

BURNABY, B.C.—Reaching 20 wins for the fourth time in the last five seasons, Western Oregon topped Simon Fraser 68-56 in the regular-season finale at the West Gym on Saturday.

Stationed as the No. 4 seed in the GNAC Tournament regardless of the result, Western Oregon (20-9, 13-7 GNAC) will face No. 5-seeded Montana State Billings in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 7. The winner will advance to play No. 1-seeded Saint Martin's on Friday.

The Wolves out-scored the Clan by six in both halves on Saturday while shooting 42.3 percent from both the field and 3-point range in the game.

Dalven Brushier finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists in the start. He hit 3-of-4 3-point attempts and picked up another six points at the free throw line.
WOU took half of their shots in the game from deep, hitting 11 total 3-pointers in their final regular season game.

Freshman O'landa Baker was one of three players to hit double figures for the Wolves, scoring 10 points in 32 minutes in his first start of the year. Baker became the 11th different Wolf to get a start during the 2018-19 season.

Western Oregon now turns their attention to the postseason. They are making their sixth consecutive conference tournament appearance dating back to the 2013-14 season where they look to defend their title. In addition to their six straight tourney appearances, WOU has been to the conference championship game in three consecutive seasons, winning two championships.

Opening tip against the Yellowjackets in the opening round of the GNAC Tournament is set for 7:30 p.m. in Bellingham, Wash. with Western Washington the tournament's host for the three-day event.

Despite the loss, Simon Fraser (15-13, 9-11 GNAC) snuck into the tournament as the sixth and final seed thanks to a Western Washington loss to Concordia.  Simon Fraser won the league's tiebreaker over the host Vikings and Alaska Anchorage as all three programs finished with 9-11 conference records.

Saint Martin's and No. 2-seeded Seattle Pacific will receive a first-round bye. Northwest Nazarene finished as the No. 3 seed and will play Simon Fraser in the opening round.
