Wildcats stay undefeated in GNAC play with WOU sweep

ELLENSBURG, Wash.—In a battle of the top two teams in the GNAC standings, Central Washington University continued its scorching start to the season with a 10-2, 11-4 sweep against No. 24-ranked Western Oregon on Saturday.

Western Oregon (12-6, 3-3 GNAC) will return to action on Monday with a doubleheader against Saint Martin's University. The series will take place in Hillsboro, Oregon's Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. First pitch against the Saints is set for 1 p.m.

The lone undefeated team remaining in the GNAC, Central Washington (17-4, 10-0 GNAC) will host Concordia University on Sunday.

Game 1: Central Washington def. Western Oregon, 10-2 (5 inn.)
Boosted by two separate four-run innings, Central Washington topped Western Oregon 10-2 in six innings in the opening game on Saturday.

After leaving a runner in scoring position in the 1st, Western Oregon opened the game's scoring account in the 2nd as Allyson Drury placed a single to left to plate Chandler Bishop

The Wildcats responded and took the lead with two runs in the 3rd and did not trail again after adding four runs to their tally in the 4th. CWU hitters connected on five straight hits to open the 6th en route to scoring four runs and ending the game.

Ryanne Whitaker, Mariah Deleon and Drury each notched two hits in the game for the Wolves.

Game 2: Central Washington def. Western Oregon, 11-4
Scoring in each of the first four innings, Central Washington completed the Saturday sweep over Western Oregon with an 11-4 win in the afternoon affair.

The Wolves picked up the early lead with two runs in the top of the 1st. Tyler Creach opened the game with a single to left and soon reached home as Ryanne Whittaker and Cheyanne Rimer followed with hits of their own. Rimer drove in both runs via a double to right-center field.

CWU didn't trail long, however, as the home side plated three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats added a single scored in the 2nd before a 6-run 3rd made it a 10-3 contest.

The Wolves avoided its second straight mercy-rule defeat with one last score in the 5th as Jenna Kelly delivered an infield single to score pinch runner Logan Carlos.

With the run, the Wolves escaped their first GNAC sweep via mercy-rule margins since 2006 when the then No. 1–ranked Humboldt State posted back-to-back blowout wins against WOU.

CWU out hit the Wolves 11-to-7 in the game. Whitaker and Rimer both posted two-hit games for the Wolves.
