Wolves quieted on opening day at the Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif.—Despite pulling to within a run late in both contests, Western Oregon softball its first two games at the Tournament of Champions on Friday.

Sonoma State (17-9) defeated Western Oregon, 8-4, in the tournament opener while Cal State East Bay (8-22) held on for a 3-2 win over the Wolves in the afternoon game.  

With the setbacks, Western Oregon fell to 15-9 on the season. The Wolves will continue tournament action on Saturday against San Francisco State (2 p.m.) and tourney host Stanislaus State (5:30 p.m.)

Game 1 – Sonoma State def. Western Oregon, 8-4
Sonoma State posted four-spots in the team's first and final at bats to defeat Western Oregon, 8-4, on Friday.  

The Seawolves cracked four singles in the opening inning for the early edge, but Western Oregon rallied with a chance to tie the game in the top of the 5th.

WOU connected on four singles in the 5th, including back-to-back two-out singles by Cheyanne Rimer and Jenna Kelly, to make it a 4-3 contest.

Batting the entire order, Sonoma State responded in the bottom of the 6th with four runs on five hits to help close out the win.

Sonoma State out hit Western Oregon 10 to 8. Kelly led WOU with a 3-for-4 line that included two RBI and one run scored.

Game 3 – Cal State East Bay def. Western Oregon, 3-2
Down by two runs heading to the bottom of the 6th, Western Oregon placed the tying run on base in the final two frames before coming up short in a 3-2 loss to Cal State East Bay.

Cheyanne Rimer opened up the 6th with a single through the left side and the Wolves soon placed a pair of runners in scoring position with a walk drawn by Jenna Kelly and a successful sacrifice bunt by Mariah Deleon. From there, Sydney Bowers delivered with a fly out deep enough to score Rimer and make it a 3-2 contest.

CSUEB starter Abby Greer got out of the jam in the 6th only for Kennedy Coy to drop a double to left in the 7th to once again put the leveling run in scoring position. Greer, however, managed to close out the win and her complete game by forcing a foul out.

Both teams registered seven hits in the game. Going 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, Rimer was the lone Wolf to record multiple hits in the game.

Maddie McClelland pitched well in the loss by allowing just two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Facing just three batters thanks to an out wiping out a would-be base stealer, Maddie Mayer worked the final 1 1/3 and did not allow a batter to reach.
