Softball takes two backed by solid starts

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Western Oregon softball team bounced back from a tough first day at the Tournament of Champions, winning a pair of games Saturday on day two of the three-day tournament. The Wolves topped San Francisco State 4-2 before a 3-1 win over host Stanislaus State.

Western Oregon (17-9) had to battle back from an early deficit in game one after San Francisco State (19-13) posted both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. Both runs came with two outs in the inning, scoring one on a double steal and the second on a fielding error.

Maddie Mayer locked it down after that, throwing another six innings of shutout baseball. Mayer (5-2) finished the complete game with four hits, two runs, one walk and six strikeouts on her line. The six strikeouts was a season-high for the freshman.

Trailing 2-1 going to the fourth, the Wolves rattled off three runs on two hits, taking advantage of two errors committed by the Gators in the inning. Kennedy Coy doubled to score one run while the other two came on a two-out error to break the tie.

Ryanne Whitaker went 3-for-4 in the game with two steals and a run scored.

Sydney Bowers also added on a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-3 with a run.

Game two saw all of the scoring completed in the third inning for both sides with Western Oregon collecting all of their offense from one swing of the bat.

Cheyanne Rimer's third-inning three-run homer helped lift the Wolves over the host Stanislaus State Warriors to battle back to a 2-2 record in the tournament. The senior now has an RBI in eight consecutive games.

Haley Fabian allowed just one run in the complete game performance from the circle. Fabian gave up five hits, two walks and struck out three to earn the win.
Tyler Creach was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

The Wolves close out the Tournament of Champions Sunday with a meeting with Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
