MONMOUTH, Ore.—Battling intermittent showers throughout the day, the Western Oregon track & field team captured six individual titles while hosting the John Knight Twilight on Friday.
Olivia Woods and
Gabe Arce-Torres swept the 400-meter runs while
Justin Crosswhite took gold in the men's 1,500. Setting a career-best in the process,
Hunter Mosman won the men's steeplechase.
Darian Wilson and
Moana Gianotti posted the team's two titles in the field events with Wilson taking the women's javelin and Gianotti the discus.
Woods led a 1-3-4 WOU finish in the 400 with a time of 58.13. Teammates
Grayson Burke and
Bethanie Altamirano finished consecutively with times of 59.09 and 1:00.23
In the men's 400, Arce-Torres neared his season best with a meet-winning 49.38. Placing fourth overall,
Gabriel Campos-Davis set a career best with a 50.78.
Crosswhite, meanwhile, paced a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,500 with a 3:53.42. Training partners
Hunter Hutton and
Tyler Jones followed in the next two spots at 3:54.40 and 3:55.82, respectively.
Winning by more than four seconds,
Hunter Mosman sliced more than 10 seconds off his previous best in the steeplechase with a 9:29.41. University of Portland's Matt Schumann took silver at 9:33.60 while
Simon Walsh, making his collegiate debut in the event, placed third at 9:40.56.
Upping her career best by five feet, Gianotti edged Willamette's Hope Duenos, 141-10 (43.24m) to 14-18 (43.17m) for the event title in the discus. Gianotti also scored a lifetime best in the hammer throw at 145-7 (44.37m).
In the javelin, Wilson finished with nearly a four-foot gap over the runner-up competitor after unleashing a 138-3 (42.14m) for the team's final victory.
In addition to Gianotti's two tosses, the Western Oregon men's and women's throwers teams tallied seven career best marks on the day.
Sam Cole hit career-best distances in both the shot put (47-11 1/4) and hammer (164-11) while
Karsten Collins added to his all-time marks in the shot (47-2 1/2) and the discus (143-10).
Mont Child rounded out the group with a six-foot lifetime best in the hammer with a 163-9 (49.92m) launch.
Despite the conditions, one meet record was set during the day as Southern Oregon's Zach Beltz took down the long jump mark with a 24-2 1/2 (7.38m) landing. Set during the 2012 season, WOU's Jake Hyde held the previous record at 23-4 3/4.
A select group of Wolves will return to action tomorrow at infield's Jenn Boyman Invitational while the bulk of the team will return to competition on April 13 at the Pacific Luau.
