PORTLAND, Ore.—Held in check offensively for the second straight game, No. 2-seeded Western Oregon bowed out of the GNAC Championships with a 3-0 loss to No. 4-seeded Northwest Nazarene on Friday.
With the loss, Western Oregon (31-16) will now wait to hear the qualifiers for the NCAA DII National Championships that will be announced on Monday, May 6. The Wolves, ranked No. 4 in the most recent West Region rankings, will hope to hear their name called as one of the at-large representatives in the West Region Tournament.
The team and staff would like to invite fans, friends and family to join them for a viewing party to be held Monday morning, May 6, in HWC 105 inside the Peter Courtney Health & Wellness Center. The viewing party will begin at 7 a.m.
A day after being held to a single hit, Western Oregon managed three hits against NNU starter and GNAC Pitcher of the Year Jordan Adams. The result represented the first time in more than three years that WOU had been shut out in back-to-back contests.
Putting immediate pressure on the Wolves, the Nighthawks scored two runs in the opening frame as the team used a leadoff single by Cassidy Fifield, a sacrifice bunt and a WOU error to plate a pair.
NNU scored an insurance run in the 6th via a fielder's choice to shortstop off the bat of Madison Strickler.
Tyler Creach,
Cheyanne Rimer and
Ayanna Arceneaux tallied the hits for WOU, all of which were singles.
Despite allowing just three hits herself,
Maddie Mayer took the loss in the circle with only one of the three runs earned.
Northwest Nazarene (28-23) advances to face No. 1-seeded Central Washington on another elimination game with first pitch set for 3 p.m. The winner of that contest will play No. 2-seeded Concordia in the title game on Saturday.
