Gators take West Region opener versus Wolves

IRVINE, Calif.—Scoring six runs across four innings, No. 4-seeded San Francisco State delivered a 6-3 loss to No. 5-seeded Western Oregon in the opening game of the NCAA Division II Softball West Regional on Thursday.

With the setback, Western Oregon (31-17) will return to action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Wolves will face the losing team between this afternoon's No. 1 Concordia Irvine and No. 8 Concordia-Portland matchup.

The Wolves opened the game's account with four hits, all singles, in the top of the 3rd. Kennedy Coy, Ayanna Arceneaux and Ryanne Whitaker connected on consecutive singles to start the stanza to set up the teams RBI leader Cheyanne Rimer. Batting with one out and the bases still loaded, Rimer tapped an infield single to the right side of the infield where there was no play for San Francisco State (39-18) starter Emily Mitchell.

Mitchell (17-12) prevented additional damage with a strikeout and a pop up to second base. The Gators turned around and rewarded Mitchell in the home half of the inning by scratching together two runs on three hits, including an RBI double by Michelle Castro.

SFSU added single runs in the next two innings to stake a 4-1 advantage and extended the lead even further with two runs in the bottom of the 6th.

The Gators outhit the Wolves 10 to 7 through the first six innings though the Wolves rallied to place the tying runner on deck in the 7th. WOU's first seven hits came from seven different players before the final effort in the 7th. The Wolves generated two runs on three hits in the final frame with Tyler Creach driving in a run on a single up the middle and Rimer collecting her second RBI of the day on a groundout to second.

Connecting on a two-out double in the 5th, Mariah Deleon provided WOU's lone extra-base hit against Mitchell.

Mitchell struck out eight batters while allowing just one walk for the complete game win.
