Coy, Mayer send Wolves to West Region final

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – Western Oregon freshman Maddie Mayer delivered two complete game shutouts while Kennedy Coy gave the Wolves a walk-off win as a part of a dramatic second day of action at the NCAA West Region 1 tournament at Eagles Field.

WOU beat both in-state rival Concordia (Ore.) and San Francisco State 1-0 to stave off elimination twice and advance to the regional championship against Concorida-Irvine on Saturday, picking up their first two postseason wins of the season.

In the first game of the day against Concordia (31-24) the Wolves were able to find their way on base several times early, picking up six hits and getting another pair aboard on walks, but had trouble crossing the plate. WOU left nine aboard in the game.

A rematch of the opening round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, the Cavaliers again turned to McKenzie Smith to start in the circle. She was knocked out of the game after 3 1/3 innings of work, allowing five hits and walking two without a run allowed.

In a 0-0 tie going to the bottom of the sixth, the Wolves pounced on an opportunity after a leadoff single and a two-base error reach put runners at second and third. Jenna Kelly flew a sacrifice to center to allow Sydney Bowers to score what would become the only run of the game.

Kennedy Coy provided the only multi-hit game for either side, going 2-for-3; a line she would mirror later in the day.

Mayer (12-4) allowed six hits in her first of two starts Friday, striking out three with no walks or runs allowed.

After keeping their season alive by ending the Cavs' year, Western Oregon was presented with their second meeting against San Francisco State (39-20) in as many days, denying the Gators their 40th win.

Mayer was again handed the softball for her second start of Friday's play, but didn't show any fatigue as she turned in an even better performance in the nightcap.

Karla Soto (17-5) tried to keep up, sending a scoreless game to the seventh, but was unable to finish regulation as she allowed four straight reaches to close the game.

Western Oregon, serving as the designated home team, took to the plate in the bottom of the seventh in a 0-0 tie. A single, walk and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with nobody out, setting the stage for Kennedy Coy's late-game heroics. The outfielder drove a 2-1 pitch up the middle, scoring Cheyanne Rimer to give the Wolves their second 1-0 win of the day and advance them to the regional final for the second time in program history.

Coy was again 2-for-3, this time adding on the ever-important RBI to keep WOU's season alive. For the second time on the day, the junior would be the only player for either side to deliver multiple hits.

Over 14 innings and two starts, Mayer allowed nine hits, walking one and striking out five without issuing a run.

No. 5 Western Oregon will now face host and No. 1 seed Concordia-Irvine, needing two wins to take the West Region 1 crown on Saturday. Game one's first pitch is set for 11 a.m. PDT at Eagles Field with game two, if necessary, to ramp up for a scheduled start of 1:30 p.m. PDT.
