LACEY, Wash.—Closing out the regular season with an 11-1 record over its last three weeks, Western Oregon will enter the GNAC Championships in postseason form after completing a series sweep over Saint Martin's with 7-3 and 9-4 wins on Saturday.
With the results, Western Oregon closed out the regular season with a 29-11 overall record and a 26-11 mark in GNAC competitions. Western Oregon, the defending tournament champion, will enter the GNAC Championships as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3 seed Northwest Nazarene in the opening game on Wednesday, May 8.
Regular-season champion MSU Billings earned the top seed and will face Saint Martin's on the opening day of the double-elimination tournament.
Gabe Benavides hurled a 6 1/3-inning quality start in the opener. Improving to 2-2 on the season Benavides struck out three and allowed two runs before leaving with a 6-2 lead in the 7th.
The Wolves knocked in two runs in the 2nd and ended up scoring in three additional innings for the 7-3 spread.
Eight different Wolves recorded a hit in the game with
Blayze Arcano leading the pack with a 2-for-3 day that featured three RBI.
Connor McCord and
Jacob Maiben added multi-hit games for WOU as the Wolves out hit the Saints 12 to 9.
In the 9-4 win in the nightcap Western Oregon scored in four of the seven innings to complete the series sweep.
The Wolves once again registered 12 hits in the game with the 7-8-9 hitters of
Jacob Maiben,
Derek Maiben, and Arcano each tallying two-hit games.
Jacob Maiben drove in four of the team's nine runs with a tw-run double in the 2nd and a two-run single in the 3rd.
WOU used six pitchers in the contest with
Austin Crowson receiving the start. Crowson allowed one run in two innings.
Christian Hammerich (2-0) recorded the win with an inning of work in relief.
