Champs dethroned on second day of GNAC Championships

PORTLAND, Ore.—With its offense held in check throughout the day, Western Oregon was eliminated from the GNAC Tournament after a pair of losses at Porter Park on Thursday.

Shut out for just the second time this season, Western Oregon (30-13) opened the day with a 10-0 loss to No. 1-seeded Montana State Billings. The Wolves returned with a 9-2 loss in the nightcap against No. 4-seeded Saint Martin's.

The results will likely end Western Oregon's season as the Wolves were ranked No. 10 in the most recent regional poll. Six teams will be selected to the NCAA DII West Region Championships.

Saint Martin's will advance to the championship round for the first time in program history. First pitch against Montana State Billings is set for 12 p.m.

Western Oregon, the two-time defending GNAC Tournament champions, entered the day ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II by averaging 8.5 runs per game. Its two-run day was just the fourth time all season the team had scored less than 10 runs over a two-game span.

Game 1:  MSU Billings, 10, Western Oregon 0
After three scoreless innings, top-seeded MSU Billings scored in four straight frames to advance to the championship round with a 10-0 win over Western Oregon on Thursday.

Allowing just one hit and two walks, Steen Fredrickson led MSU Billings (32-18) with a 7-inning, one-hit gem.

The Wolves nearly scored in the opening frame without the benefit of a hit as a walk and a hit batter placed a pair of runners on base while a wild pitch moved both players into scoring position. The second of Fredrickson's nine strikeouts got the Yellowjackets out of the 1st-inning jam.

Jacob Maiben opened the 2nd with a double to right-center field while a grounder off the bat of Derek Maiben moved his brother to third. Jared McDonald walked and moved up a base on another wild pitch only for Fredrickson to once again escape the emerging threat with another strikeout.

Maiben's hit turned out to be the lone successful strike by a WOU batter until the 9th inning when Griffey Halle singled to left to open the final frame. By then, however, the 'Jackets sent 10 runners home with a 4-run 4th opening the floodgates.

MSUB finished with 12 hits in the game. Conner Linebarger and Tyler Detloff both registered three RBI on two hits in the contest.

Game 2: Saint Martin's 9, Western Oregon 2

After alternating runs over the span of four innings, Saint Martin's broke the game open with a 6-run tally in the 8th to knock out the defending champs with a 9-2 win to close out the second day of action at the GNAC Championships.

WOU struck first in the bottom of the 4th after Connor McCord opened the frame with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, McCord scampered home via a Griffey Halle single to left.

The Saints immediately evened the game in the top of the 5th with back-to-back doubles by Bryant Nakagawa and Cody Chavis.

McCord returned to the plate and delivered another go-ahead run with a ground out to second that plated Collin Runge. Runge opened the home half of the 5th with a single while a sacrifice bunt by Patrick Chung and a stolen base placed Runge 90 feet from the plate.

The Saints again knotted the battle with a single run in the top of the 7th. SMU continued its momentum with the game-changing 8th inning that featured six hits off of three separate WOU pitchers.

WOU starter Gabe Benavides went 4 2/3 innings with one run on five hits. The senior struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Allowing two runs, SMU counterpart Clark Streby lasted 6 1/3 innings and scattered six hits against three strikeouts. Teammate Mickey Walker picked up the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

SMU out-hit the Wolves 12-7. Jared McDonald and McCord combined for four of the team's seven hits as each player went 2-for-4 at the plate.
