Soccer Dominates Play at Academy of Art, Finishes in 2-2 Tie

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Western Oregon University soccer team fired 23 shots and held Academy of Art to just eight shots and in the end the Wolves tied with the Knights at 2-2 after 110 minutes of play Monday.

"We came out playing really well today. We had two good first half goals. Unfortunately we gave up two set piece goals," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said.  "We were disappointed we didn't connect on any of our other chances but more importantly, we have to do a better job defensively."

WOU (1-2-1) tallied 10 shots in the first half and then added 12 more in the second half. They had the only shot in the first overtime, while Academy of Art (3-1-1) had the only shot in the second overtime. Of the 23 shots, the Wolves landed eight on goal while the defense held the Knights to eight shots and three landing on goal.

The Wolves had 11 corner kicks to five for Academy of Art and there were 33 total fouls, 20 called on the Wolves.

WOU dominated play right away generating a shot just two minutes in. After a shot by the Knights, Kaili Brundage fired a shot that was saved, but just a few minutes later at the 12:21 mark Alyssa Tomasini knocked home her third goal of the season for the 1-0 lead.

Academy of Art answered right back generating a shot over a minute later and off a corner kick, the Knights were able to find the back of the net when Brooklyn Morera scored off an assist by Sydney Cooke and Baylie Christensen to even the game at 1 nearly 15 minutes in.

The Wolves quickly shifted field position coming right back getting multiple looks and after Melinda Ortega fired a shot and a corner kick was generated, Jacky Beristain scored off an assist by Ortega at the 38:33 mark to push WOU back in front at 2-1.

The Knights started the second half strong getting a couple of shots early before Katie Williams tied the game with a goal at the 55:35 mark off an assist by Sydney Cooke.

Brundage and Danielle VanOrd came right back with a couple of shots on goal that were both saved by Lara Pflicke. WOU tallied a couple more shots, but weren't able to regain the lead sending the game into overtime. WOU held Academy of Art without a shot over the final 33 minutes of regulation.

Isabelle Creighton nearly posted the game-winning goal late in the first overtime when her shot in the final 30 seconds was saved. WOU then had a corner kick, but time ran out right after the try sending the game into a second overtime.

Academy of Art had the only shot in the second OT that came just over a minute in, but didn't land on goal. WOU had another corner kick late in the period, but weren't able to get a shot off with the game ending in a 2-2 draw.

Brundage took eight shots with three landing on goal. Creighton added five shots with two on goal. Beristain added three shots with one on goal. VanOrd and Tomaini each added two shots with one landing on goal. In goal, Alex Qualls played all 110 minutes and recorded a save. In addition to Qualls playing all 110 minute, Kaitlin Poe, Nikki Hoey, Malia Napoleon, Beristain and Creighton all played the entire game.

Morera led Academy of Art with three shots and one on goal. Williams and Anissa Wilson added two shots apiece with one landing on goal. Pflicke played all 110 minutes in goal and came away with six saves.

WOU now returns home for their home opener this coming Thursday against Hawaii Pacific starting at 3 p.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.
