BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Western Oregon volleyball team will continue their first week of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a visit to Montana State Billings to take on the Yellowjackets. First serve Sept. 21 from Alterowitz Gym is set for 6 p.m. PDT.
The Wolves enter Saturday's match 2-6 overall with an 0-1 conference mark after Tuesday's 3-0 (15-25, 22-25, 24-26) loss to Concordia in Portland. WOU was able to out-pace the Cavs in kills, 44-40, getting 13 from
Sarah Crowell and 12 from
Sianna DeCarli, but Concordia's .304 attack percentage gave them the overall edge.
As of Tuesday's match, DeCarli is amongst the conference's leaders in hit percentage (.239), kills per set (3.04) and points (87.0).
Aubrey Stanton has doled out 197 assists in her first eight matches, averaging 7.58 per set, while also delivering a team-high seven service aces in that time.
Crowell will likely eclipse the 50-kill mark on Saturday, entering the match with 47 kills on 132 attacks. The freshman is coming off a season-high in kills (13) and attacks (30) on Tuesday.
MSUB entered the week 1-7 overall and picked up their second win of the season after claiming a 3-1 win over Concordia to open conference play on Thursday night prior to Saturday's meeting with Western. The Yellowjackets snapped a five-match losing streak after going 0-4 at the West Region Crossover where they went 1-12 in sets, being swept in each of their first three matches. Their lone win prior to GNAC play came Sept. 7 in a 3-0 victory over Fort Hays State.
The 'Jackets are led by the 78 kills of Maddi Vigil, 136 assists of Alexa Smythe and 24.0 blocks of Joelle Mahowald. Mahowald has recorded 5.0 blocks twice this season, including her most recent appearance.
WOU holds a record of 15-9 against MSUB since 2007, having won five of the last eight meetings. The teams split their 2018 season series as Western Oregon defended home court with a 3-0 win, but fell 3-1 in Billings in the final match of the year. WOU's last win at Alterowitz gym came in straight sets on Oct. 15, 2015. They are 5-7 at the venue.
