Soccer Bounces Back in Idaho Battling to Force 1-1 Draw Versus Northwest Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho – After trailing at the break, the Western Oregon University soccer team continued with the pressure in the second half, eventually tying the game. After 110 minutes, the teams weren't able to break the 1-1 tie as the Wolves finished in a draw at Northwest Nazarene in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

WOU (3-3-2, 0-1-1 GNAC) held a 21-13 edge in shots, while Northwest Nazarene (3-4-1, 0-1-1 GNAC) held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Nighthawks held a 8-7 edge in corner kicks, while the teams combined for 25 fouls with WOU committing 15.

"The ladies did an amazing job bouncing back today. The team played really well together and created several opportunities. We've done a great job outshooting teams, but now we need to focus on that final execution to finish," Head Coach Kacey Bingham said.

The Wolves fired their first shot on goal in the 16th minute that Danielle VanOrd sent to the bottom center that was saved.

WOU kept Northwest Nazarene without a shot until the 25th minute when Alex Qualls was up to the challenge and recorded the save.

Following a couple of close chances by WOU, Northwest Nazarene was able to score late in the half when Rikki Myers knocked it home to give the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead at the break.

WOU tilted the field in the second half dominating play getting multiple shots off. After a shot by Isabelle Creighton was saved in the 69th minute, the Wolves kept firing and later generated a corner kick a few minutes later. In the 80th minute, WOU sent the corner kick into the box and as the Wolves rushed, it went off of one of the players and into the net for the tying goal. *Later upon review the goal was credited to Selene Konyn who took the corner kick for her third goal of the season*

In the first overtime each team tallied a shot on goal with Alyssa Tomasini's shot being saved and then Qualls turned away a chance in the 99th minute to keep the game tied.

The Nighthawks came out strong to start the second overtime getting three shots off and two on goal in which Qualls made both saves. Tomasini then tallied the final two shots of the overtime with a shot being saved in the 107th minute and then her shot in the final seconds missed to end the game in a draw.

Creighton led the way with six shots, with one landing on goal. Tomasini added five shots with two on goal. VanOrd had three shots all on goal and Selene Konyn also added three shots. Erika Moreno Gonzalez tallied two shots.

Maddy Parton and Myers each recorded three shots for Northwest Nazarene, with Parton putting two on goal and Myers having all three land on net.

In goal, Qualls played all 110 minutes and made six saves. Alexis Montoya made six saves as well for Northwest Nazarene and played all 110 minutes.

WOU will now return home to start a five-game homestand beginning with Seattle Pacific next Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.
