Women's basketball splits upcoming week of GNAC action

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team will split their upcoming week of games, playing in Portland Tuesday, Jan. 7, against the Concordia Cavaliers before returning home to take on the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets Saturday, Jan. 11, at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon (4-7, 1-3 GNAC) secured their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win of the season last week with a 73-70 double overtime victory over the Western Washington Vikings. It was the first-ever home double overtime win for the Wolves in their NCAA era and their first trip to double OT since 2008. Tresai McCarver led all scorers with 22 points, adding on seven rebounds and six assists in the victory. Freshman Meadow Aragon nearly posted her first collegiate double-double, coming up with season-highs on 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Wolves followed the conference win with a tough seven-point loss at home to the Simon Fraser Clan, 64-57. After leading for more than 31 minutes of the game, the Wolves lost a fourth-quarter lead and the game after being out-scored by 15 in the final period. Sophomore Amber Winkler was able to deliver a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, both career-highs for the post. Shariah Green also had her best offensive game in a Wolves uniform, leading the team with 17 points down low.

WOU boasts one of the best defenses in the GNAC, allowing just 62.5 points per game on 36.9 percent field goal shooting. They have held opponents to fewer than 60 points on six occasions this season.

Concordia (2-10, 1-3 GNAC) has struggled to open the season, sinking to eight games below .500 over the opening eight weeks of play. Despite the lack of wins, the Cavaliers were able to secure a GNAC victory over the Alaska Nanooks on Dec. 7 to get in the win column. After the victory, CU had nearly a month of rest, not playing again until Jan. 2 and dropping both games since to Simon Fraser and Western Washington, respectively.

The Cavaliers have the lowest-scoring offense in the GNAC, averaging only 57.0 points per game while allowing 70.4 to opponents. They are shooting a conference-low 35.4 percent from the floor, but 33.9 percent from 3-point range, good for second in the GNAC.

WOU is 7-6 against CU all-time in their NCAA era. The Cavaliers won both meetings last season while the Wolves took both during the 2017-18 season. WOU is 3-4 on the road in the series. Their last win in Portland came on Feb. 13, 2018.

Montana State Billings (7-6, 2-2 GNAC) has split each of its two weeks of conference play to keep themselves just over .500 through 11 games. The 'Jackets lost four straight games to start the year, but bounced back with a four-game winning streak and have played back-and-forth basketball since.

Two years removed from a run to the Elite Eight, the Yellowjackets are led by the 14.1 points per game of Hannah Collins and 11.0 of Taryn Shelley. Shelley, a Division I transfer from Washington State, also averages 7.5 rebounds per game— sixth-best in the GNAC.

WOU is 6-25 against MSUB all-time. The 'Jackets are 7-1 in the last eight meetings and have never lost consecutive games to the Wolves. Western's last win in the series was on Feb. 17, 2018, and their last win at home on Jan. 5, 2013. They are 3-13 in Monmouth against MSUB.

Tuesday's game in Portland against the Cavaliers is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff while Saturday's matchup with the Yellowjackets will be the first of a doubleheader at NPE Gym that includes the men's basketball team taking on Seattle Pacific. The women's game will tip at 2 p.m. PST. Both matchups this week will have live stats and video available here.
