MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team plays their penultimate home series of the 2019-20 season this week, hosting the Seattle Pacific Falcons and Saint Martin's Saints at NPE Gym.
Western Oregon (5-16, 2-12 GNAC) will try and snap their eight-game losing streak after coming close in both games last week, falling 83-73 to the Concordia Cavaliers before dropping an overtime visit to the MSUB Yellowjackets, 87-75.
The Wolves are currently averaging 58.7 points per game while allowing 65.4 a night to opponents. They are shooting 37.7 percent from the field and 25.2 percent from 3-point range.
Individually, they are led by the 11.5 points per game of
Keyonna Jones and 10.3 of
Shariah Green; the only two Wolves averaging in double figures.
Seattle Pacific (7-15, 5-9 GNAC) is currently on a three-game losing streak, falling into a tie for eighth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. The Falcons are two games out of a conference tournament spot with six games left to play.
SPU was able to pull away for a 73-51 win over the Wolves in their first meeting of the season back on Jan. 18 in Seattle. Jones led the Wolves with 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting while SPU was paced by the 12 of both Ashlynn Burgess and Madi Hingston. WOU took great care of the basketball, giving it up for only eight turnovers. Burgess leads the team averaging 12 points per game, while Hailee Bennett is the only other player to average double-figures at 10.8.
WOU is 3-37 against SPU all-time. Western was able to break an eight-game losing streak in the series Feb. 28, 2019, when they pulled out a 60-52 win at home. It was their first win in Monmouth since 2015. They are 3-16 at home in the series.
Saint Martin's (10-11, 5-9 GNAC) has positioned themselves right along with Seattle Pacific for a chance at one of the lower conference tournament seeds. The Saints snapped a four-game losing streak last Saturday with their 71-63 win at home against Western Washington.
This week represents the final road series of the regular season for SMU, playing their final four games at home to finish out the conference slate. Bria Thames is one of the most dominant all-around players in the conference averaging 14.7 points and 11.6 rebounds. She set the GNAC rebounding record earlier this season with 29 rebounds agianst Concordia. Claire Dingus adds 12.9 points and Tierney DeDonatis adds 11.9 to give the Saints three in double-figures.
WOU is 10-30 against Saint Martin's all-time. SMU has won three of the last four meetings dating back to 2018. Western's last win in the series was in Lacey on Nov. 29, 2018. Their last win at home came on Nov. 30, 2017. Western is 6-13 at home in the series.
Western's meeting with Seattle Pacific on Thursday, Feb. 13, is set for a 5:15 p.m. start while their game Saturday, Feb. 15, against SMU will tip off at 4: 15 p.m. PST. Both games are set to be part of doubleheaders along with the WOU men's basketball team at NPE Gym. Live stats and video are
