FRESNO, Calif. – The Western Oregon baseball team opened their 2020 season on Thursday night, falling 4-3 to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds on a walk-off grounder at FPU Diamond.
Scoring would not come until the eighth inning for Western Oregon (0-1) as they could not figure out the mound work of Nic Boatman. Boatman pitched five shutout innings in the start, giving up four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. In total, the Wolves struck out 14 times on Thursday in the loss.
Fresno Pacific (3-4) plated their first run in the third when a sacrifice fly to right field scored an unearned run. Two innings later, the Sunbirds extended that lead with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-0 lead.
That advantage held until the top of the eighth when Western was able to break through for their first run of the night.
Derek Maiben walked to lead off the inning and was brought around later on
Connor McCord's RBI double down the right field line. McCord was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI in the loss.
After trailing 3-0, the Wolves were able to tie things up in the top of the ninth with two more runs. Maiben singled in a run, bringing around
Cole Carder to score.
Anthony Zellner crossed home later in the inning when
Tyler Brandenburg singled through the left side.
Forcing a bottom of the ninth inning, the Wolves were unable to keep the tie and send the game to extra innings. A leadoff walk immediately got the winning run on base for FPU after a full count. Two wild pitches moved the pinch runner to third and set up a chance for Fresno Pacific to finish off the game with one out. A grounder to shortstop would be enough as the run came in from third and finished off the Wolves' comeback bid.
Mike Peterson provided 4.2 innings in the start for Western, giving up three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one in no decision. McCord's 2-for-4 performance would be the only multi-hit game for the Wolves, tallying seven hits in their first game of the year.
Next up, the teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 14, as they continue their four-game series. First pitch in game one is set for 2 p.m. PST at FPU Diamond.
