MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team embarks on their final road trip of the 2019-20 season this week, visiting the Central Washington Wildcats and Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks.
Western Oregon (5-18, 2-14 GNAC) battled hard in two close losses last week, falling to the Seattle Pacific Falcons by two and the Saint Martin's Saints by three as their losing streak continued to a conference-long 10 consecutive games. SPU needed a jumper at the buzzer to get their win while SMU escaped when the game-tying 3-pointer rimmed out just before time expired.
Rachel Rogers scored a team-high 20 points over the two games, including 12 points, four rebounds, four steals and an assist against the Saints on Saturday.
Tresai McCarver was right behind her with 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists combined over the two games.
The Wolves are averaging 58.5 points per game as a team while allowing 64.8 per game to opponents. They are shooting 38.3 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from 3-point range.
Central Washington (14-10, 9-7 GNAC) is currently in fifth place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a one-game lead over MSUB and 1.5-game advantage over Saint Martin's. The Wildcats have lost two of their last three games, falling to the No. 8 Alaska Anchorage Seawolves and the Western Washington Vikings in that span.
In their first meeting of the year on Jan. 25 in Monmouth, CWU won 70-50 on the back of 49 percent field goal shooting. They finished with four scorers in double digits led by the 15 of Kaelie Flores.
WOU is 12-27 against CWU all-time. Their last win came on Feb. 2, 2019, in Ellensburg to snap a 10-game losing streak in the series. The 74 points in the win was the fourth-most the Wolves have ever scored on Central during their NCAA era. WOU is 4-15 on the road in the series.
Northwest Nazarene (18-6, 13-3 GNAC) sits comfortably in second place in the conference standings and is one of two teams, along with the Seawolves, who have already locked up their spot in the conference championships.
The Nighthawks are riding the momentum of three straight wins and victories in seven of their last eight games into the week, having only fallen to UAA during that time. NNU boasts the GNAC's highest-scoring offense, dropping 78.3 points per game while allowing 69.2 a night.
Western nearly got the better of NNU in Monmouth on Jan. 23, eventually falling 63-53, but leading for a great majority of the game. The Nighthawks went on a 23-3 run in the fourth quarter to overcome the late deficit and win.
WOU is 11-26 against NNU all-time. The Nighthawks have won six straight in the series dating back to 2017. Western's last win was on Jan. 21, 2017, in Nampa. They are 5-13 on the road in the series.
