Women's basketball concludes season this week

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team concludes their season this week, hosting the No. 5 Alaska Anchorage Seawolves and Alaska Nanooks at NPE Gym to finish off the 2019-20 campaign and honor senior Shariah Green.

Western Oregon (5-20, 2-16 GNAC) suffered a pair of losses last week in their final road trip of the season, falling 70-46 at Central Washington before an 82-62 loss at the hands of the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks. The senior Green led the team in scoring in both games, dropping 31 points over the two contests.

The Wolves shot nearly 50 percent from the field at NNU last Saturday, hitting 22 of 45 attempts and going 4-for-6 from deep, but giving up a costly 29 turnovers to neutralize their effective shooting.

Saturday night against the Nanooks will serve as Senior Night in Monmouth where Shariah Green will be honored before the game for her two years of play for the Wolves. Green transferred to Western after spending her first two collegiate seasons at Occidental College. In two seasons with the Tigers she played a combined 50 games, starting 49 of them, and scoring 10.1 points a night.

Green saw her playing time dialed back in her first season with WOU, but has turned into a cornerstone of the team in her final collegiate season. Through 25 games this year she is averaging 10.5 points per game, good for second on the team, with a 45.2 percent field goal shooting mark and a team-high 4.7 rebounds per game average. She has recorded 14 games scoring in double figures including a season-high 21 points with seven rebounds against MSUB.

The No. 5 Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (27-2, 17-1 GNAC) enter the week on a nine-game winning streak, having not lost since Jan. 23 when they faltered for their only conference defeat at Western Washington. UAA topped WOU in their first meeting of the season, 73-41 on Dec. 7 in Anchorage.

Western is 6-33 all-time in the series, but have not beat the Seawolves since Dec. 6, 2003, in Anchorage. Their last win at home was on Jan. 16, 2003. WOU is 3-16 at home.

Alaska (7-20, 2-16 GNAC) currently sits in a tie for 10th with Western in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings. The Nanooks have lost six straight games and have yet to win a road game this year, currently holding a 0-10 mark in true road contests. UAF was able to steal an overtime win from the Wolves, 81-76, in Fairbanks on Dec. 5 to begin conference play.

WOU is 21-18 in the series and have won three of the last five meetings. Alaska has not won in Monmouth since Feb. 4, 2016. Western is 14-5 at home in the series.

The Wolves take on the Seawolves Thursday, Feb. 27, at 5:15 p.m. while Senior Night against Alaska on Saturday, Feb. 29, will tip at 2 p.m. PST at NPE Gym. Both games will be played as doubleheaders preceding the Western Oregon men's basketball team and will have live stats and video available here.
