Women's basketball can't handle perimeter shooting of No. 5 Seawolves

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team started their final week of play with a tough 76-48 loss at the hands of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Thursday at NPE Gym.

Western Oregon (5-21, 2-17 GNAC) fell for the 13th straight game on Thursday, being held to 10 or fewer points in each of the first three quarters of the game. Alaska Anchorage (28-2, 18-1 GNAC) ran off to a 10-0 start and never trailed in the wire-to-wire win. The Seawolves posted 24 points in the opening quarter, helping them to a 40-19 lead at halftime.

WOU hit just eight field goals in the opening half, going 36.4 percent from the field before the break. They committed 13 of their 20 turnovers in the opening half while forcing six. UAA relied on heavy 3-point shooting to run out to their early lead, hitting 10 3-pointers in the first half.

Anchorage finished the game with three players in double figures, led by the game-high 15 points of Safiyyah Yasin. She added on five rebounds, an assist and a block in her 15 minutes in the start. Jahnna Hajdukovich and Rachel Ingram each finished with 12 points on a combined eight made 3-pointers.

Sophomore Rachel Rogers led the Wolves in scoring with 12 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist in the start. It was the third time Rogers has scored 12 in a game this season, matching her season-high and marking her fifth game with at least 10.

Tresai McCarver added on 10 points, picking up two rebounds and an assist as well in a team-high 27 minutes of work. No player for either team logged more than 27 minutes in the contest.

Freshman Meadow Aragon posted her second-highest rebound total of the season with eight boards, five points, two steals and an assist. Aragon led all players Thursday in rebounds.

Western finished with a 30.6 percent field goal shooting mark and 27.8 percent from 3-point range. They would turn the ball over 20 times while pulling away 14 from the Seawolves.

The fourth quarter was their most efficient of the game, matching UAA with a 22-22 period in scoring.

Next up, Western Oregon concludes their season on Saturday, Feb. 29 against the Alaska Nanooks. Senior day will honor Shariah Green who will play her final collegiate game against UAF, tipping off at 2 p.m. PST at NPE Gym.
