Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Despite Jones' career night, Wolves fall in OT to 'Jackets

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Western Oregon women's basketball team fell just short in their bid to sweep the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in their season series, losing 87-75 in overtime at Alterowitz Gym on Thursday night.

Western Oregon (5-16, 2-12 GNAC) slid to their eighth consecutive loss to finish off their week of play despite holding a lead at the end of each of the first three quarters. The back-and-forth struggle included 10 lead changes and seven ties.

Both sides started relatively quiet in scoring, battling to a 13-11 Wolves lead after the first quarter. MSUB (11-11, 6-7 GNAC) relied heavily on Taryn Shelley in the first half as she scored 12 of the team's 30 points before the break. She would finish the night with a double-double, dropping 23 points and 14 rebounds along with three assists, two steals and a block.

The Wolves' largest lead came late in the third quarter when Rachel Rogers converted a layup to make it a 47-37 lead with 3:21 left in the quarter. It would remain at that margin, moving to 53-43, as the team's entered the fourth.

The 'Jackets went on a 20-7 run over the first five minutes of the final quarter to take back the lead for the first time since the closing seconds of the first half. With neither side leading by more than four points over the final 6:14 of regulation, it was a difference in free throw shooting that saw WOU push the game into OT. Western shot 100 percent at the line in the second half on 12-for-12 while MSUB went just 6-for-12 at the stripe in that time. In the game, Western missed just one free throw, going 19-for-20.

Trailing by four at 71-67 with just over a minute left, the Wolves relied on four straight makes at the free throw line from Keyonna Jones and Cali McClave to even things up after an MSUB missed layup.

Keyonna Jones put together an unforgettable night offensively. The junior went for 28 points, five rebounds and an assist before fouling out after 33 minutes of play. It was just the third time that Jones has eclipsed 20 points in a collegiate game and the second time this season she has surpassed the mark to set her new career-best in scoring.

Taking back possession in a tie game with four seconds left, Western Oregon was unable to finish off the job in regulation, giving the ball up on an offensive foul to head to overtime for the third time this season and the second time on the road.

Overtime played in favor of the 'Jackets as WOU shot just 2-for-10 from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point range in the extra period. They finished 2-for-20 from three in the game with both makes coming in the first half. MSUB was able to outscore Western 16-4 in OT, taking just four field goals and getting nine points at the free throw line.

Tresai McCarver and Shariah Green each scored 13 points for the Wolves. McCarver collected seven rebounds and four assists along with a steal in a team-high 39 minutes of work.

Next up, Western Oregon returns home to host the Seattle Pacific Falcons and Saint Martin's Saints next week. Tipoffs are set for 5:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. PST on Thursday, Feb. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 15, respectively, at NPE Gym.
