NAMPA, Idaho – With the score just 1-0 at the break, the Western Oregon University soccer team came close to evening the score throughout the first half. In the second half, Northwest Nazarene tallied a trio of goals on their way to claiming the 4-0 win Monday.
It was a close first half with Northwest Nazarene (6-0) holding a 10-4 edge in shots. The Nighthawks opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a goal by Rikki Myers.
Right after that, Chloe Smith nearly answered for the Wolves (1-3) when she fired a shot from near the top of the box that was saved in the 11th minute. In the 21st minute, Alyssa Tomasini broke free for a shot that went low center that was saved to keep it a 1-0 game.
Piper Matson and Tomasini each got shots off before the break that just missed leaving the Nighthawks with the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Morgan Mihelich stood tall in net for WOU making three saves over the first 45 minutes to keep it a 1-0 lead for NNU.
NNU came out on fire in the second half firing six shots before the seventh one went in for Ashley Parton at the 62nd minute for the 2-0 lead.
A few minutes later, Alejandra Jaramillo found the net in the 65th minute for a 3-0 lead. Carolyn Moravec closed the scoring in the 85th minute with a goal to push the lead to 4-0.
Gabby Pulliam and Matson each tried shots in the second half, with Pulliam's being blocked and Matson's shot just missing out high.
For the game, NNU held a 22-6 edge in shots, including 8-2 on goal. NNU had all four corner kicks and there weren't a lot of fouls with 10 total whistled going 6-4 on NNU.
Matson and Tomasini each tallied two shots, with Smith and Pulliam also recording a shot. In goal, Mihelich started and played all 90 minutes coming away with four saves.
Myers and Sierra Sanchez led NNU with five shots each. McKenzie Buell added three assists. In goal, Alexis Montoya turned away both shots that she faced playing all 90 minutes.
WOU will remain on the road as they will travel to Seattle on Friday, Apr. 16 facing Seattle Pacific starting at 3 p.m. They will play two straight games against the Falcons, turning around and playing on Apr. 17 as well.
