BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon University volleyball team will keep the road swing going this week as they will play Western Washington in three matches over two days this week. The teams will play a single match on Friday and then a doubleheader on Saturday.
WOU began the spring season this past week playing both Central Washington and Alaska Anchorage. Through six sets played, the Wolves have 59 kills, 50 assists, seven service aces, 93 digs and seven blocks.
Individually, Isabel Hurliman leads the team in points with 19 and leads the team in kills with 16. Lauren Smith is second with 14.5 points and 14 kills. Makenzie York gives the Wolves three players in double-digits in points sitting at 12 with 10 kills. Emily Olson is fourth on the team in points with 8.5 and kills with eight.
Aubrey Stanton leads the way with 22 assists, while Laney O'Neil adds 11. Allie Spear and Hurliman each have two service aces. On defense, Spear has a team-high 28 digs, with Hurliman adding 18 and Stanton with 12. York and Delaney Smith have a team-high three blocks, while Hurliman and Bella Maclellan have two blocks apiece.
This will be the first matches of the spring for Western Washington. During the 2019 season, the Vikings went 27-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II West Regional. That year Western Washington won both meetings against WOU by 3-0 scores.
Calley Heilborn and Kayleigh Harper led the team in points with both going over 400 in 2019. Heilborn had 420.5 points with 355 kills, while Harper added 411.5 points and 318 kills. Malia Aleaga dished out 1,254 assists and Tuput Lologo spun in 37 service aces. On defense, Heilborn tallied 422 digs, while Mae Thungc had 399. Harper sent back 147 blocks and Chloe Roetcisoender added 127.
Of that group, Heilborn, Aleaga, Lologo and Roetcisoender are back this season.
Since 2000, Western Washington holds a 35-4 mark in the series, with the last WOU win coming in Monmouth in 2012, 3-0. The Wolves are 4-16 at home and 0-19 in Bellingham.
WOU and WWU will open their three-match set on Friday evening starting at 5 p.m. The teams will then play two on Saturday with the first match starting at 10 a.m. and the second to follow at 2 p.m.
