York and Hurliman Pace Volleyball in Spring Opener at Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Getting the chance to play for the first time since late 2019, the Western Oregon University volleyball team nearly claimed the opening set against Central Washington on Friday. The Wildcats ended up holding on in the first set on their way to taking the 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12) victory.

Makenzie York and Isabel Hurliman led the way for the Wolves (0-1) with each tallying eight kills. Aubrey Stanton paced the offense with 14 assists, while Allie Spear had a team-high 14 digs. Hurliman nearly made it a double-double with 12 digs.

In the first set of the season for WOU, a pair of kills by York around a double-block by Bella Maclellan and Lauren Smith had the Wolves with a 4-2 lead. After trailing by seven, WOU worked their way back in the set pulling to within one at 19-18 following a three-point rally on a kill by Hurliman, a solo block by Delaney Smith and an attack error. The Wolves fought back to within a point three more times down the stretch before the Wildcats (1-2) held on for the 25-22 set win.

In set two, Central Washington jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead. The Wolves tried to get in the set with points from Maclellan and Hurliman, but the Wildcats kept the pressure on and claimed the 25-14 set win.

In the third, Hurliman and Lauren Smith posted early kills to keep WOU within three at 7-4. After a big run by the Wildcats, WOU kept fighting with York, Lauren Smith and Maclellan collecting kills. After the kill by Maclellan, CWU was able to win the final points of the set for a 25-12 third set win and 3-0 match victory.

WOU tallied 33 kills in the match, along with a pair of service aces and blocks, 26 assists and 53 digs. CWU collected 30 kills, along with eight service aces, six blocks, 27 assists and 48 digs. Analia Vasquez led the Wildcats with 10 kills, Sydney Remsberg had 16 assists and Hannah Stires tallied 17 digs.

WOU will remain in Ellensburg as they will play two matches against Alaska Anchorage tomorrow (Saturday) with the first match scheduled for 10 a.m. followed by the second at 2 p.m.
