Carlos and Derrick Help Lead Softball to Third-Place Finish at GNAC Championships

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Logan Carlos hit a big grand slam and Nicki Derrick tossed five-plus innings of shutout relief to help lead the Western Oregon University softball team back to a 7-6 win over Saint Martin's during the second day of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on Friday. With the win, the Wolves advanced to face top-seed Northwest Nazarene for the second straight day and the Nighthawks took the 9-0 win in five innings to end the season for WOU as they finished third at the GNAC Championships.

In the first game of the day, 11 of the 13 total runs scored in the game would come in the second inning. Playing as the home team in this game, WOU (14-17) got on the board first in the home half of the first inning. Carlos started her 4-4 day with a single up the middle. Isabelle Lewis walked and after Chandler Bishop walked to load the bases, Mariah Hyre drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center for the 1-0 lead.

Saint Martin's (19-18) came right back with six runs on five hits in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. Derrick came on in relief to strand runners at the corners with a ground out to third.

The Wolves wasted no time answering right back in the home half of the second. Allyson Drury was hit-by-pitch and Kiley Lynn worked a full-count walk. Hannah Stewart also walked to load the bases. Following an out, Carlos delivered the big hit of the game when she connected on a 0-1 pitch and drove it deep over the left field fence for a grand slam. WOU kept the inning going with Lewis walking. After the second out was recorded, Hyre walked and Sydney Bowers ripped a shot to third base that went for an RBI single and helped WOU come all the way back to tie the game at six.

After all the scoring in the second inning, the teams would remain tied at six until the bottom of the sixth. Carlos began the inning with another single and then moved to third on a single to right by Lewis to put runners on the corners. With an out recorded, Hyre hit a hot shot towards the shortstop that went for a single through the infield and brought in Carlos with what would turn out to be the winning run at 7-6.

Derrick closed out the comeback win in the seventh, working around a one-out walk to get a fly out and fielder's choice to end the game.

WOU held a 7-6 edge in hits with Carlos going 4-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Hyre added two RBI. In the circle, Maddie Mayer started and went the first 1.2 innings allowing six runs (five earned) to end up with the no decision. Derrick then worked a strong 5.1 innings to get the win (3-1) allowing just a hit and three walks, along with no runs and a strikeout.

Karley Yoshioka led Saint Martin's with two hits, while Malia Pinder drove in three runs. In the circle, Abby Runyon started and later came in to finish the game. For the game, she pitched 1.2 innings and allowed three earned runs. Tia Ridings came on in the second inning and went two innings, allowing three earned runs. Savannah Owen also pitched 2.1 innings and took the loss (4-7) allowing just one earned run.

With the win, WOU had to turn right back around and face Northwest Nazarene in another elimination game. A two-out double by Turner in the first inning ended up being the only hit for the Wolves with Sidney Booth tossing a five inning, complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts.

The Nighthawks (30-11) picked up all the runs they would need in the first inning with two runs. They would add three more in the second and four more in the third to provide the final margin of 9-0.

NNU outhit WOU 9-1 with Emma Mulligan leading the Nighthawks with three hits. Ivy Hommel drove in four runs. Booth picked up her 15th (15-2) win of the season in the circle allowing just the one hit in five innings.

WOU will honor their five seniors on Saturday as the GNAC Championships will come to a close at the WOU Softball Field with Northwest Nazarene and Western Washington playing for the tournament title.
